The Race Card US Rep. Cori Bush claims cop ‘would’ve known the difference’ between gun, Taser if Daunte Wright ‘wasn’t a Black boy’

By Dom Calicchio | Fox News

A congresswoman from Missouri claimed Tuesday night that a White Minnesota police officer accused of killing a Black man "would’ve known the difference" between her service weapon and a stun gun if shooting victim Daunte Wright "wasn’t a Black boy."

Democratic U.S. Rep. Cori Bush made the accusation in a Twitter message, referring to former Brooklyn Center police Officer Kim Potter, who police say mistakenly used her gun instead of a stun gun Sunday, killing Wright during a traffic stop.

Bush also scoffed at the notion that "more training" for police might have prevented the shooting death.

"The 26-year-veteran cop, former president of the police union, doesn’t know the difference between a taser and a gun," Bush wrote, "and you say more training would’ve fixed this?

"Nah," Bush continued. "But I bet she would’ve known the difference if Daunte wasn’t a Black boy or if he was her loved one."

Potter was placed on administrative leave after Sunday’s shooting, in accordance with common police practice following such incidents. On Tuesday, Potter and Brooklyn Center police chief Tim Gannon each submitted their resignations.

Gannon drew fierce criticism Monday after suggesting at a news conference that Potter had used her gun accidentally instead of her stun gun.

Wright’s family called the theory unacceptable.

"A mistake? That doesn’t even sound right," Wright’s father, Aubrey Wright, told ABC News on Tuesday. "This officer has been on the force for 26 years. I can’t accept that."

The claim that Potter mistakenly grabbed the wrong device was the 18th such claim by police officer in the U.S. in the last 20 years, according to Greg Meyer, a retired Los Angeles police officer who now researches use-of-force situations, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Potter having fired just one shot was an indication it likely was an error, Meyer told the newspaper.

"In a Taser situation, it can only fire one at a time, so when we have one of these weapons confusion cases that’s kind of the big clue," he said.

Meyer said police he recommends that police carry their gun on the side of their dominant hand and the stun gun on the side of the other hand. Gannon had told reporters Monday that the Brooklyn Center police recommend that also.

The reason why Potter used a gun instead of a stun gun will likely be a key focus of the investigation into Wright’s shooting death.

Bush, 44, a registered nurse and Black Lives Matter activist, was elected to Congress in 2020. Years earlier, she participated in the response to the 2014 shooting death in Ferguson, Missouri, of Black man Michael Brown by a White police officer.

Soon after taking office in Washington, Bush drew boos from some congressional colleagues after saying the House needed to impeach then-President Trump, whom she called "the White supremacist in chief" during a speech on the House floor.

I just like the way that they keep trying to spin this in different directions. Nobody is saying the cop isn't guilty of shooting the kid. She fucked up, big time. A 25 year police vet should absolutely know the difference between the way a Taser feels in their hand versus their service weapon. BUT, if this kid hadn't resisted arrest AND tried to flee the scene, then she wouldn't have been put in the position of having to draw a weapon to try and subdue him.

Generally, I'd agree. But I've seen the specific taser they were using. Man, if that thing doesn't look, feel, and operate like a handgun without actually being a handgun...

They even load the taser cartridges in a magazine the same way semiauto handguns are loaded. The exact same way.

The only thing I could point out is that even in the heat of the moment she should have positional awareness of where the gun is and where the taser is.

I agree that she should have had positional awareness. If you watch the bodycam footage, the cop that was to her right, his service weapon was on his right side and his Taser (which is also partially yellow to distinguish it from a gun) was on his left side. I would assume that her set up was the same way. With as much time on the force that she has, even in the heat of the moment, she should have known which weapon she drew since her pistol was on her right and (I assume) her Taser was on her left.

I think the biggest factor is they train to stay alive, with the gun, using dominant hand. You don't train to draw the tazer wrong handed. In the heat of the moment you're going to rely on your training. Which in this case was a mistake.

She stuffed up. Doesn't seem like a bad person.

They have erected concrete barriers and fence around her house.
