Australia produces 373,728.37 barrels per day of oil (as of 2016) ranking 31st in the world. Australia produces every year an amount equivalent to 11.4% of its total proven reserves (as of 2016).
Australia is rich in commodities, including fossil fuel and uranium reserves. ... Western Australia (including the Bonaparte Basin straddling Western Australia and Northern Territory) has 72 percent of the country's proven crude oil reserves, as well as 92 percent of its condensate and 79 percent of its LPG reserves.31 Aug 2014

AUD I'd assume. So, fast and loose thats about $2 per gallon in tax. So let's say in Australia (sorry Lost, I forget which state you live in SA?) You pay a bit over $5 AUD per US gallon. That comes out around $3.80 USD. Right now, in my home town, regular is about $2.7USD (without taxes) I understand Aus has a fairly robust oilfield (I've worked there after all) but I'm guessing the remaining difference is from importation costs, which I'm too lazy to check right now.
My point is, the disparity in cost of fuel there is not near as much as its made out to be. Cigs on the other hand, whew!

Cigs!!
As I think I've mentioned elsewhere, I reckon we would have to be the most expensive country in the world for tobacco products.
Take a look at this graph!
