Update Gabby Petito's remains found in Wyoming, FBI confirms 'homicide'

By Audrey Conklin | Fox News

The FBI on Tuesday afternoon confirmed that the remains investigators discovered on Sunday in the Teton-Bridger National Forest belonged to missing 22-year-old woman Gabby Petito.

"Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue confirmed the remains are those of Gabrielle Venora Petito, date of birth March 19, 1999. Coroner Blue’s initial determination for the manner of death is homicide. The cause of death remains pending final autopsy results," the FBI tweeted Tuesday with a statement from the Jackson, Wyoming, coroner.

The FBI and local law enforcement agencies were searching for Petito over the weekend in a remote campsite area on the border of the national forest and Grand Teton National Park. Remains discovered on Sunday were transported to Blue's office for an autopsy, which he performed on Tuesday. The final report nor the exact cause of death have been released.

"The FBI's commitment to justice is in the forefront of each and every investigation," FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Michael Schneider said in a statement. "The FBI and our partners remain dedicated to ensuring anyone responsible for or complicit in Ms. Petito's death is held accountable for their actions."

Petito and her 23-year-old fiancé, Brian Laundrie, were traveling from New York to Oregon in a white 2012 Ford Transit van that they converted into a camper. Tipsters have suggested the pair was last seen together in late August in Wyoming near Grand Teton National Park.

Petito’s family reported her missing on Sept. 11, weeks after she last spoke with her mother in late August.

Laundrie returned home to North Port, Fla., where the couple lived with Laundrie’s parents, 10 days earlier on Sept. 1 with no sign of his fiancé. Authorities recovered the van on Sept. 11, and began a forensic examination of the vehicle on Sept. 14.

Laundrie is a person of interest in the case and has since also been reported missing. North Port law enforcement officers are continuing their search Tuesday for any signs of the 23-year-old in an area of the Mabry Carlton Jr. Memorial Reserve not far from Laundrie's family home.

"May she rest in peace," Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino said in a statement reacting to news of Petito.

The FBI continues to seek information about the homicide. Anyone can submit helpful information to submit to the FBI at http://tips.fbi.gov, 1-800-CALL-FBI or 303-629-7171.

Laundrie's Florida neighbors say family appeared to go 'camping' after boyfriend returned from Wyoming

By Charles Creitz | Fox News

The neighbors of the Laundrie family in North Port, Fla. – the would-be in-laws of deceased 22-year-old Gabby Petito – told Fox News Wednesday that about a week after Petito's then-fiance Brian Laundrie returned from the Mountain West, the family packed up an "attached camper" and took what they believed to be a long-weekend camping trip.

Charlene and William Guthrie told "The Story" that it has been a "nightmare" living across from the Laundries since Petito and later Brian went missing.

The Guthries said they only moved to the community, just north of Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda, in early summer. But within months their neighborhood was abuzz with activity.

"We didn't know it was Gabby's, we just assumed it was [Brian's] van," Charlene said when the younger Laundrie returned earlier this month.

"We just thought they had come back from wherever. We didn’t know they were on a trip. We assumed they went back to their house or wherever they got a house … We didn’t know much about them at all," she said.

The Guthries thought Petito was still living in the home with Laundrie's parents, which the Blue Point, N.Y., native had been doing since she moved to Florida to be with Laundrie.

William Guthrie recalled doing some yard work one day when the Laundries hooked what appeared to be a new camper to the back of their pickup truck – and didn't think much of it.

"I saw them doing some work. And then when they prepared for their trip, I saw them loading the camper."

They said the Laundries were gone "for the weekend" after packing up the new camper, and that when police later came to their home on what they were told was a missing persons case, they mentioned seeing the family go off for the weekend.

William added he found it odd that the parents would go off on a camping trip with their 23-year old son in such a small camper.

Agree 100% that his parents are complicit in this thing.

Brian Laundrie manhunt: Tipster sends Dog the Bounty Hunter to Florida campground 75 miles from family home

By Michael Ruiz , Stephanie Pagones | Fox News

EXCLUSIVE: Duane "Dog the Bounty Hunter" Chapman is investigating a tip that alleges Brian Laundrie, the fugitive fiancé of Gabby Petito, went into a Florida campground 75 miles away with his parents in early September — but only two of them were seen leaving.

Chapman announced Saturday he was entering the search for Laundrie, and tips quickly poured in. He told Fox News he received a tip on Monday that Laundrie’s parents spent the night in Fort De Soto Park with their son twice in early September from Sept. 1-3 and Sept. 6-8.

"They were registered, went through the gate. They’re on camera. They were here," he told Fox News exclusively on Monday evening. "We think at least if he’s not here right now, we are sure he was caught on camera as he went in the gate — that he was here for sure. Not over in the swamp."

Online sleuths reported that a law enforcement helicopter could be heard in the area of the campground. A Pinellas County sheriff spokesperson told Fox News it was not conducting an investigation at Ft. DeSoto.

He later added: "Allegedly, what we’re hearing, is two people left on the 8th. Three people came in on the 6th, and two people left on the 8th. I think he’s been here for sure."

Earlier on Monday, attorney Steven Bertolino, who represents Brian's parents, Chris and Roberta, said his clients "do not know where Brian is."

"They are concerned about Brian and hope the FBI can locate him," Bertolino wrote. "The speculation by the public and some in the press that the parents assisted Brian in leaving the family home or in avoiding arrest on a warrant that was issued after Brian had already been missing for several days is just wrong."

A Fox News Digital reporter overheard a park worker say investigators had checked surveillance video on the grounds.

Conditions within park are "much easier" than some others, namely the T. Mabry Carlton Reserve, where local police and sheriff’s deputies have spent days combing through the dense, swampy terrain, Chapman told Fox News.

Fort De Soto Park is located in Pinellas County and is about 75 miles away from the Laundries’ home on Wabasso Avenue. It spans more than 1,130 acres and consists of five keys.

The tip gives renewed hope that authorities might soon reach a conclusion to what has become a costly weeks-long search for Laundrie and a quest for answers that has extended from coast to coast. The exhaustive manhunt that has extended nationwide and garnered massive attention.

Laundrie and 22-year-old Petito embarked on a cross-country journey in mid-June in a converted white Ford Transit van with the plan to visit national parks along the way. They had begun dating years earlier after meeting at their local Long Island, N.Y. high school and had moved to North Port, Florida, to live with Laundrie’s parents.

On Sept. 1, months after they began their trip, Laundrie returned to the North Port home in the couple's van, but without Petito, officials said. The young woman was not reported missing until 10 days later, on Sept. 11, when her mother filed a police report in Suffolk County, N.Y. Police seized the van from the Laundries' home on Sept. 11.

Laundrie was subsequently named a person of interest in Petito’s disappearance, and on Thursday, the FBI issued an arrest warrant for bank card fraud. Authorities alleged he used someone’s Capital One Bank card and the personal identification number during the time when Petito was missing. Neither investigators nor a spokesperson for Petito’s family have said whether the card belonged to Petito.

Fox News recently obtained the missing persons’ report for Petito, in which her mother, Nichole Schmidt, stated that her daughter was last seen at 7 a.m. on Aug. 30 at Grand Teton National Park. Schmidt wrote in the report that her Long Island home was a "probable destination."

But Laundrie also subsequently went missing, his parents claimed through their attorney.

After the Petito’s missing persons’ report was filed on Sept. 11, Laundrie would not cooperate with the police investigation, officials said. The Laundries’ attorney released a statement on Sept. 14, in which he announced he had advised his clients to remain "in the background." The family revealed three days later that they had not seen him since Sept. 14.

Charlene Guthrie, who lives directly across the street from the Laundrie family, told Fox News she saw Brian Laundrie mowing the lawn, riding his bike with his mother and appearing to go camping with his parents in the days after he arrived alone. Petito had previously been living with the family at their North Port, Florida, home.

Petito’s body was discovered near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on Sept. 19. A Teton County coroner ruled the death a homicide but has not yet announced the cause.

Friends, family and the public paid their respects during a Sunday ceremony on Long Island.

Speaking during the service, Petito's father, Joseph Petito, called his daughter "the most amazing person I've ever met."

"I want you to take a look at these pictures, and I want you to be inspired by Gabby," he said at the service. "If there’s a trip you guys want to take, take it now. Do it now while you have the time. If there is a relationship you’re in that might not be the best thing for you, leave it now."

Chapman has his own anonymous tip line at 833-TELL-DOG for people who are hesitant to call authorities directly – however anyone with information on Laundrie's whereabouts is asked to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or 303-629-7171.

It really depends on the state they operate in and it usually only applies to bail jumpers.

Brian Laundrie's mother called 911 on ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter’

By Michael Ruiz | Fox News

"Dog the Bounty Hunter" called it "a shame" that Brian Laundrie’s mother Roberta Laundrie called 911 Saturday rather than answer his knock on the family’s front door.

Audio emerged Monday indicating that Brian Laundrie’s parents called 911 to report the presence of Duane "Dog" Chapman on their North Port, Florida property.

"The female, Roberta... called in on 911," a dispatcher is heard saying on a radio recording, adding that the caller "referenced a situation with the male."

Police were already in the immediate area when Roberta Laundrie made the call, and Chapman told Fox News that he spoke with North Port police before he arrived at the property.

"It’s a shame they wouldn’t speak with us," he said Monday. "The police said we were welcome to knock on the door so we did. I wanted to tell the Laundries that our goal is to find Brian and bring him in alive."

A police spokesman confirmed the call and said that the department handled it like it would have any other report.

"We've been called to the house numerous times for all sorts of issues: media, protestors, celebrity searchers," said North Port Police Public Information Officer Josh Taylor. "It's not something normal. If the family calls and is concerned, we will respond like we would for anyone."

Chapman arrived in North Port Saturday to help in the search for Laundrie – who disappeared last week, days before an FBI-led team found the remains of his fiancée, Gabby Petito, at a campsite in Wyoming’s Teton Range.

That’s near where she was likely last seen alive in late August at a restaurant in Jackson Hole. By Sept. 1, Laundrie had arrived home at his parents’ house in Florida – driving Petito’s van.

Chapman told Fox News over the weekend that he went to the family home first because he believes in second chances.

"And the dad can still reach out to me, through social media," Chapman added. "Let’s get the kid captured alive. Alive."

Chapman has his own anonymous tip line at 833-TELL-DOG for people who are hesitant to call authorities directly – however anyone with information on Laundrie's whereabouts is asked to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or 303-629-7171.

Brian Laundrie spotted buying cell phone on day of disappearance: report

By Stephanie Pagones | Fox News

Florida fugitive Brian Laundrie allegedly purchased a cell phone from an AT&T store in his hometown of North Port the day his parents claimed to have last seen him, according to a report.

TMZ reported that Laundrie was spotted "with an older woman" inside one of the cell phone stores in North Port, Florida, where he was living with his parents and his fiancée, Gabby Petito, on Sept. 14. The FBI later visited the store and seized footage from the surveillance cameras, the report states.

Laundrie’s parents told authorities three days later that he left for the nearby T. Mabry Carlton Reserve on Sept. 14, but had not come home.

Fox News Digital visited an AT&T store in North Port Monday, where an employee said they could not confirm or deny it was the store Brian was reportedly seen at. The employee said that all questions should be directed to corporate. Requests for comment to corporate have gone unanswered.

Speaking to Fox News Digital on Wednesday, Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino said the Laundries had purchased a cell phone sometime after Brian returned, but said he did not know the date of the purchase.

Bertolino confirmed that Brian Laundrie left the phone behind when he was last seen on Sept. 14, and said he believed the FBI had the device.

When asked why the Laundries had purchased a new cell phone, Bertolino responded: "Sorry I can’t speculate."

A spokesperson for the FBI's Denver Field Office told Fox News she could not respond to questions regarding specifics of the ongoing investigation.

Gabby Petito in new bodycam footage details violent fight with Brian Laundrie

By Michael Ruiz | Fox News

Gabby Petito told a Utah police officer that Brian Laundrie hit her on Aug. 12, according to newly released bodycam video from a second Moab officer who arrived at the scene – but she quickly backtracked and claimed she struck first.

Meanwhile Laundrie said he "didn’t have time" to defend himself from allegations he’d struck his fiancée.

"I pushed her away," he tells the officer. "She gets really worked up, and when she does she swings and she had her cell phone in her hand. So I was just trying to push her away."

The Aug. 12 911 call – first reported by Fox News Digital earlier this month – illustrated what experts have flagged as a potentially abusive relationship between Petito and Laundrie. Fox News previously obtained a different officer’s bodycam video, but it appears that the police did separate interviews.

"Did he hit you though?" the officer asks.

"I guess," she replies – although she still appeared to downplay the incident to the second officer and try and assume blame herself.

"I guess, yea," Petito continued, with tears in her eyes. "But I hit him first."

"Where did he hit you?" the officer replied. "Don't worry, just be honest."

She then backtracked and said he grabbed her "with his nail" and claimed to have been the aggressor herself.

"He didn't like hit me in the face," she said. "He didn't like punch me in the face or anything."

"Did he slap your face, or what?" the officer asked.

"Well he like, grabbed me with his nail, and I guess that's why it looks, I definitely have a cut right here," she said, rubbing her cheek. "I can feel it, when I touch it it burns."

The second video, obtained through public records requests from Fox News and FOX 13 Utah, reveals more details about the encounter just weeks before Petito was last seen alive in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

"He got really frustrated with me, and he locked me out of the car and told me to go take a breather, but I didn’t want to take a breather," Petito says in the new video. "And I wanted to get going. We’re out of water."

The officer asked Petito if she’d been hit in the face and arm.

"Is there something on your cheek here?" he says. "Did you get hit on the face?"

"I’m not sure," Petito said, telling the officer she was just trying to get into the car.

The witness had also told police Laundrie looked like he was trying to steal Petito’s phone and that she scrambled into the car, crawling over him through the driver side door after it seemed like he might drive away without her.

At another point in the video, the officer asks a witness to clarify what he saw.

"Did you ever see the male strike the female?" he asked.

"I wouldn’t say that," the witness replied. "I think I saw maybe a push or a shove, but not a full on punch to a face or anything."

"You did see her slapping him though it sounds like," the officer said.

    "Yes," the witness replied.

Later in the video, an officer told Laundrie that Petito hadn't admitted he struck her.

Laundrie’s alleged mistreatment of Petito parallels patterns of domestic abuse, numerous experts have told Fox News. And her reaction to the police presence – on the verge of tears and blaming herself the entire time – could be the signs of a victim being manipulated by her abuser.

The city of Moab announced an independent investigation into its police dpartment’s handling of the stop earlier this month. State authorities told Fox News this week that they are not involved in that probe.

Laundrie returned to Florida alone on Sept. 1 – driving her van. A few days later, he bought a new cellphone, according to his attorney, Steve Bertolino.

Then he left it behind with his wallet and vanished. The FBI is now leading a manhunt for the 23-year-old, who is wanted on debit card fraud charges and has been named a person of interest in Petito’s homicide.

Before police encountered Laundrie allegedly speeding up the entrance ramp to Arches National Park just north of town, a dispatcher told them that the reported party witnessed "a male hit a female" outside the Moonflower Cooperative – an organic grocery store just off Main Street.

When the first officer flashed his lights, Laundrie slammed into the curb, later claiming that Petito had tugged the steering wheel.

She said she was trying to get Laundrie’s attention when she saw the lights.

Two Moab police officers responded to the incident, and two U.S. Park Rangers also arrived on scene.

The Rangers’ bodycam videos have not yet been released by federal authorities.
