News What we know about the Michigan high school shooting

By Emma Colton | Fox News

Tragedy struck Oxford High School in Michigan Tuesday when a shooting left three students dead and eight others, including one teacher, injured.

"I just left Oxford high school after a detailed walk-through and examination of the scene and evidence. As I reflect on the day, it is one that is filled with overwhelming sadness. My heart aches for families that will never be the same and a quiet sweet community that had its innocence shattered. I have seen far too many bodies and death in my career, but children’s are always the worst," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said according to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office early Wednesday morning.

At about 12:51 p.m. on Tuesday, a 15-year-old suspect began shooting in an area of the school where many classes take place, according to police. Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe said police received more than 100 emergency calls and the suspect was in police custody within five minutes of police receiving the first call.

"I was in my biology room, just like laughing with a couple of my friends, and, just like a normal day. And then I hear gunshots coming from close by — and my mood just switched. I went from laughing to crying in about a second," one student, Alysse Avey, told the New York Times.

"We just got in the corner, and sat down exactly how we were supposed to — like we followed the protocols that we practiced, and everyone followed. No one talked, we didn’t scream or anything, we were just silent," Avey added.

The shooting left three students dead. They have been identified as 16-year-old Tate Myre, 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, and 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin.

Myre has been described as a "standout" football player who died in the back of a patrol car as deputies rushed him to a hospital.

A petition, which has over 36,000 signatures as of Wednesday morning, was started on Tuesday to rename the school’s Wildcat Stadium after Myre. His peers and others lauded him in the comment section of the petition as a hero who was also the "face of Oxford Football."

"Tate was a wonderful young man who was tremendously hardworking and respectful," the Oxford Wildcats football team also tweeted following his death.

Madisyn Baldwin was a senior at the school who was expected to graduate this school year and had just been accepted to a handful of colleges, including with full scholarship. She was the eldest of three siblings and was an artist who enjoyed drawing, writing and reading, according to her family.

"This kind of thing can happen anywhere and sadly it happened even in a sweet quiet community like Oxford," Bouchard said at a press conference on Tuesday.

A total of eight people, including students and a teacher, were also injured in the attack, with some of them in critical condition.

A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head. A 17-year-old girl is also in critical condition after she was shot in the chest.

A 14-year-old boy is in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the head and jaw. Another 14-year-old boy is on a ventilator after suffering chest and neck wounds. The 47-year-old teacher was grazed by a bullet.

The unidentified suspect is in police custody and has invoked his right to remain silent. A motive for the attack is unclear.

"There was no resistance during the arrest and the suspect has asked for a lawyer and has not made any statements as to a motive," the sheriff’s office said on Facebook Tuesday.

Police say the 15-year-old used his father’s gun in the attack, which was only purchased on Nov. 26.

"A search warrant was executed at the suspect's residence and is being inventoried. The firearm used was a 9mm Sig Sauer and had been purchased by the father four days prior to the incident. There was no prior information shared with the Sheriff's Office or the School Resource Officer before the incident," the sheriff’s office wrote in an update on Facebook.

Sheriff Bouchard added in his statement Wednesday morning that police worked through the night and will continue their investigation Wednesday.

"I am super proud of our team as they continue to work through the night and I know the work they did this day saved lives. It is also evident from the scene that the lockdown protocols, training and equipment Oxford schools had in place saved lives as well. I will close this day with more prayers, as we will be back at it in a couple of hours," he said.

Oxford High School is closed for the remainder of the week.

Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ordered Michigan and American flags to fly at half-staff at public buildings and grounds in the state following the tragedy. Private businesses, residents and others are also encouraged to lower their flags.

"My heart breaks for the students, teachers, staff, and families of Oxford High School," Whitmer said of the tragedy. "The death of multiple students and the shooting of many others, including a teacher, is horrific.

"I want to thank the first responders on the ground working hard to keep people safe as law enforcement officials investigate this shooting and get the community the help it needs right now. Our state is in mourning alongside the parents who had their children taken from them today and the entire community in Oxford."

My condolences to the families but I'm gonna come across as an ignorant asshole: I'm not much for victim shaming, but we have to start looking at how these kids are treated by parents, teachers, and peers. These kids aren't becoming killers on their own in a vacuum.

Update Michigan school shooting suspect Ethan Crumbley charged with terrorism, murder: 'Not just an impulsive act'

By Emma Colton , Paul Best | Fox News

Ethan Crumbley, the 15-year-old suspect accused of opening fire at his Michigan high school, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to one count of terrorism causing death, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, and 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The sophomore, who is being charged as an adult, allegedly fired more than 30 rounds in the hallways of Oxford High School on Tuesday shortly before 1:00 p.m., killing four students and wounding seven others, including a teacher.

He appeared in Oakland County Court by video on Wednesday, slumped over in a vest, white mask, and glasses.

Mark Keast, an assistant prosecuting attorney in Oakland County, told Judge Nancy Carniak that he doesn't "have the words to describe how horrific" the surveillance video of the shooting is.

"He methodically and deliberately walked down a hallway, aimed the firearm at students and fired it," Keast said. "After children started running away from the defendant, he continued down the hallway, again at a deliberate and methodical pace, pointing and aiming inside classrooms and at students who hadn’t had the opportunity to escape."

Judge Carniak ordered Crumbley to be held without bond and transferred to Oakland County Jail, where he will be separated from adults.

Lt. Tim Willis told the judge that Crumbley recorded videos on his phone the night before the incident in which he "talked about shooting and killing students the next day at Oxford High School."

"Further, a journal was recovered from Ethan’s backpack also detailing his desire to shoot up a school to include murdering students," Willis said.

Crumbley's parents went to Oxford High School about two to three hours before the shooting to meet with their son and school officials over behavioral issues in the classroom.

"The parents were brought in the morning of the shooting and had a face-to-face meeting with the school," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.

"The content of that meeting obviously is part of the investigation but we did not learn of that meeting, nor of the content of that meeting until after the shooting and during this investigation."

Crumbley also had to meet with school officials the day before the shooting "over behavior in the classroom that they felt was concerning."

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald noted that the terrorism count is not a "typical" charge, but she said that it is necessary to get justice for all the victims in this shooting.

"The children that I have just listed and those that were injured, they’re the victims in the first-degree murder charges and assault with intent to murder," McDonald said.

"But what about all these other children? What about all the children who ran, screaming, hiding under desks? What about all the children at home right now who can’t eat and can’t sleep and can’t imagine a world where they could ever step foot back in that school. Those are victims too."

The suspect used a 9mm Sig Sauer, according to police, which the boy’s father bought on Black Friday, just four days before the shooting. A motive has not been announced.

McDonald said that her office is looking at charging the parents and "that decision will be made swiftly."

The suspect has declined to speak with authorities following his arrest and his parents have hired an attorney.

"There is no conversation that’s going on and no cooperation at that level," Bouchard said Tuesday.

At least 30 shell casings were found at the scene and the suspect still had 18 live rounds when deputies apprehended him.

Crumbley was apprehended by police within five minutes of the first 911 call, Bouchard said.

Four students died due to the shooting. Bouchard identified three of the students on Tuesday as 16-year-old Tate Myre, 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, and 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin.

The fourth student died on Wednesday morning and was identified as 15-year-old Justin Shilling.

Three of the injured victims – a 15-year-old male, a 17-year-old male, and a 47-year-old teacher – have been discharged from the hospital. Four injured victims are still hospitalized.

He's being tried as an adult. All bets are off when that happens.

There's a 14 or 15 year old kid that murdered a cheerleader down in Jacksonville and he's being tried as an adult. His shit is all over the place. His trial will start next year and it will go nationwide. Aiden Fucci.

Update Michigan school shooting: Superintendent says suspect was called to office but 'no discipline was warranted'

By Paul Best | Fox News

Investigators seize items from suspected Oxford school shooter's home. (WJBK)

Superintendent of Oxford Community Schools Tim Throne described Oxford High School as a "war zone" Thursday, two days after 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley allegedly fired at least 30 rounds in the hallways, killing four classmates and injuring seven others, including a teacher.

Crumbley, who is facing terrorism, murder and other charges, recorded videos the night before the shooting in which he "talked about shooting and killing students the next day at Oxford High School," Oakland County Sheriff's Office Lt. Tim Willis said Wednesday.

The sophomore's behavior was concerning enough that school officials called Crumbley's parents to the school for a meeting on Tuesday just a few hours before the shooting, but Throne said that discipline wasn't warranted.

"There’s been a lot of talk about the student that was apprehended, that he was called up into the office and all that kind of stuff. No discipline was warranted. There are no discipline records at the high school," Throne said in a video message.

"Yes, this student did have contact with our front office, and yes, his parents were on campus Nov. 30. Again, I will take any and all questions at a later time, but that’s not now. This is as much information as we can give you today."

Crumbley met with school officials on Monday as well due to behavioral issues in the classroom, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.

"We're also hearing that there were rumors that someone had said something or knew something. None of that came to us until today," Bouchard said on Tuesday. "So if there is information, that is the kind of thing we need to know and get looped into."

The 15-year-old's father bought the 9mm Sig Sauer that was used in the attack on Black Friday, just four days before the shooting, according to police.

Mark Keast, an assistant prosecuting attorney in Oakland County, said that Crumbley "methodically and deliberately walked down a hallway, aimed the firearm at students and fired it."

Crumbley still had 18 live rounds when police apprehended him in the hallway just five minutes after the first 911 call, Bouchard said.

Throne said it would be weeks before the building is back in order and students and staff can return to Oxford High School.

"I could not be more proud of our staff, teachers, our administration. We had administrators performing CPR. Our students did exactly as they were trained," Throne said.

"Because they carried out their game plan so well, this high school is a wreck right now. Maybe the best way to describe it is it's like a war zone."

The superintendent said he is meeting with groups of parents — starting tonight — to address their concerns. Throne also said that he is in contact with the sheriff's department about releasing some video of the incident.

A spokesperson for Oxford Community Schools said Thursday that school officials "have been advised not to speak with media amidst the ongoing police investigation."

The four students who died in the shooting are 16-year-old Tate Myre, 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin and 15-year-old Justin Shilling.

At least three of the injured victims have been released from the hospital, including the 47-year-old teacher who was shot in the shoulder.

Crumbley is facing one count of terrorism causing death, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, and 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Michigan school shooting: Ethan Crumbley’s parents facing involuntary manslaughter charges
By Greg Norman | Fox News

The parents of the teen suspect accused of killing four students after opening fire inside a Michigan high school earlier this week are now facing charges, prosecutors announced Friday.

James and Jennifer Crumbley are each facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Their son, 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley, allegedly fired at least 30 rounds in the hallways of Oxford High School on Tuesday, killing four classmates and injuring seven others, including a teacher.

Police say James Crumbley purchased the 9mm Sig Sauer pistol that was used in the attack just four days before the shooting, on Black Friday.

"The parents were the only individuals in the position to know the access to weapons," Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said Thursday. The gun "seems to have been just freely available to that individual."

"All I can say at this point is those actions on mom and dad’s behalf go far beyond negligence," McDonald also told WJR-AM. "We obviously are prosecuting the shooter to the fullest extent. ... There are other individuals who should be held accountable."

Meanwhile, Ethan Crumbley is facing one count of terrorism causing death, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, and 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The teen recorded videos the night before the shooting in which he "talked about shooting and killing students the next day at Oxford High School," Oakland County Sheriff's Office Lt. Tim Willis said Wednesday.

The sophomore's behavior was concerning enough that school officials called Crumbley's parents to the school for a meeting on Tuesday just a few hours before the shooting, but Superintendent of Oxford Community Schools Tim Throne said that discipline wasn't warranted.

Crumbley met with school officials on Monday as well due to behavioral issues in the classroom, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.

Fox News’ Paul Best and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

I don't know about this. If they knew what he was gonna do and they tried to get him out of it or aided him in any way during the planning, commission, or aftermath, then yeah, charge them. Throw the book at them. But if they didn't, then they're not responsible for the killer's actions, regardless if they're his parents and the actual owners of the gun. I know there's a knee-jerk reaction for parents of kids, this definitely tugs on the heart strings, but this could be a really bad move. I think I need to see the facts of the parents' involvement before jumping to 4 counts of involuntary manslaughter each.

    Yea, I dunno.

I did just read somewhere that the father gave the gun to his kid for his birthday, apparently mom posted about going to try out the new birthday present with her son. It sure sounds like the parents were negligent, I guess if they knew he had a history of violence or just not being responsible they should be charged with something.
