Not Racist ‘I Only Date Black’: Star Wars Actor John Boyega Says He Will Only Date Black Women, Defends Against Criticism

By Amanda Prestigiacomo - The Daily Wire

“Star Wars” actor John Boyega will only date black women and will not apologize for his preference.

Boyega has repeatedly spoken out about so-called racial diversity in Hollywood and is currently working with Converse to provide funding to young black filmmakers.

“I only date black,” the 30-year-old told GQ U.K. “Then it’s about chemistry, personality, goals. Is there a synergy? Can I help you? Can you help me?”

“I’m very disciplined in the type of women I speak to,” he continued. “They don’t want you in their business.”

“Being in the public eye, they would prefer if you had the wife and family. It’s the ultimate PR package,” Boyega told the magazine. “But my parents have been together for 35 years. There’s nothing that this world can do in terms of pressure to make me be inspired by anything else but my parents.”

The “Breaking” actor caught some flack online about his comments on race.

“I’m sorry [John Boyega] but if a white celebrity turned round and said he only dates white girls he’d be called racist,” one Twitter user posted in a now-deleted tweet, “but it’s okay for a black celebrity to say he only dates black people.”

“When they talk about preferring brunettes or blondes they’re not talking about a wig,” Boyega responded. “My preference is not a topic for debate.”

In another tweet, the actor wrote, “Always thought certain reactions to preference would only occur if you belittle other people while expressing what you like. This would mean your preference is based on negativity. Yet all I have expressed is my love for cultural familiarity and the positivity I feel. Interesting.”

In the same interview with GQ, Boyega defended his work with Converse, which is focused on black filmmakers.

“We’re talking about diversity and I know that irritates you,” he said of critics. “But maybe that’s because you enjoyed a sea of blond hair and blue eyes. You’ve enjoyed it for years. You’ve enjoyed it so much, you think, why would they want that?”

“It feels great to be a part of that ferocious, forceful, positive change, and I just love that they have to eat it,” he said. “When we celebrate and empower ourselves, please believe that your position is to mind your business. Me uplifting myself is not against you. We just want the same opportunities.”

Boyega has even publicly ripped Disney, which purchased Lucasfilm from George Lucas in 2012, for how the corporation allegedly treats people of color.
