    The Crooner Thread

This thread is a place to post all those songs with smooth, sultry voices back by a big band. The music that seems timeless.

I don't know if you can get BBC iPlayer feed or if you have to go via proxy

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...ld_John_Grant/

Its worth finding out, the new series of the songwriters circle just came out on BBC 4, John Grant ex of the Czars and currently of his high gay but melancholy and confessional baritone solo album, Alain Toussant, 70's writing legend and James Dean Bradfield of 80's and 90's political rebels the Manic Street Preachers went head to head and the result is impressive.

Touusaint's back catalogue like working in a coal mine is enough to stop the show, his unreleased 'its raining' is going to make you stop and listen. MSP's 'Small black flowers' is another heart tugger but if you have to listen to anything get past John Grants unknown status and his more mediocre confessional tunes and his neutered studio album and see what he can do live with nothing but a mike and a piano.

I never knew Nat did a version "Don't get around much..." - Tony Bennett's is the most famous one. Tony Bennett is great.

We stayed with my uncle for 6 months and at an impressionable age I got sickened by all the big band music...I hated the bold brass sound. He loved Errol Garner and Lou Rawls and any jazz that, as my dad described it "starts on the same note and ends on the same note, but everyone does whatever they want to in the middle!"

But i do love Nat King Cole - and his "Nature Boy" is a fave. It's not Christmas without Nat's Christmas album playing as far as I'm concerned.

Saw Michael Buble before he was gigantic...at Club Babalu in Vancouver. Cool to hear him back then. Never thought there'd be this big resurgence of big band...thought he'd have to change to rock to get anywhere.
