Never use a debit card for gas. That same hold on a credit card doesn't affect you at all (unless you are near your limit).

Me too...all the time. Maybe they don't "reserve" money from your account for us like that. I think that we have a different system here in Canada - we are limited to $99 on most pumps I find.

And around here in some municipalities we often have to go in and prepay anyway - all to do with an incident a few years ago when someone did a gas-and-go (fuel equivalent of a dine-and-dash) and ended up running over and killing the poor teenage attendant.

We have a number of pump islands and they're rarely marked pay at the pump (which pisses me off to no end)...

so you try to start pumping and a little hobbit voice comes out the pump saying - HGttre s ss... pay with card first IJHTt bhhssss
