Speaking of the Ultra, Lance, you said you can watch movies through USB on yours? I haven't tried mine since it's gotten updates but I know a year ago it would play video but I couldn't get audio. Tried multiple files/formats.
Yeah, I have the Ultra 4K in the living room. I plugged my external HDD into the USB port and I added the Roku Media Player channel and it works fine.
I did all that too and nothing. Maybe I will try again.

I'd bet It's an issue with mine. I bought it when the current? model first came out. Possibly almost two years now? Funny thing is my ROKU TV it works just fine via USB. Like I said, it's been a long time since I tried it direct wired since all my current movies are streamed to the Roku via a Plex server in the other room.
I'll try it again this afternoon when I get home from work. Have you checked to see if the firmware is current?
I haven't checked but I know it did an update in the last few months because it added a couple shortcuts to the end of my apps. I won't be able to check it until the end of the week, I'm off to work for 3 days.
Scratch that, I just checked and many of the movies DO now work. The updates must have fixed it. Pretty sure AAC audio works I think AC3? DTS does not but I think it will do DTS passthrough if I turn on my receiver.
