A majority of states don't even use the federal minimum wage. It's $12/hour in Colorado and it's $14/hour in California.

I misread ours here, it's actually went up to $12.56/hour this year.

You can work hard and live the dream of decades of debt. I did it. Got out of service, bummed around for a year o so, decided to go to night school to get a degree, worked 50-60hrs/week while going to class 20hrs/week for two years. Started at $8/hr and currently make around 5 times that. I put in the time, worked my ass off to get here. Wife worked full time too with 2 kids. Was it rough? Hell yeah. Did we live paycheck to paycheck? Absolutely.

Man, you sound like my parents and I was one of those kids - with pots and pans for toys.

I had it hard, but not as hard as them. My younger sister is a soft as anything (but still studied hard enough to get into nursing)

GA min wage is $5.15 per hour. $7.25 for employers that fall under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

I didnt have it that hard really. Mom when she was young grew up on a substance farm. It still sorta was when I was very young. My point wasn't to say "look at me" but more that I've always believed, and still do, that anyone can still do well in the US. Its just a matter of figuout what you like, and how to make $$ on it. When I was younger, I thought all you had to do was work hard, and while there's still an aspect of that, I've known too many that have worked hard, but not gotten ahead. Usually that's by their personal habits, but thats a different discussion.

I know man, and what you say rings true. But I would suggest this isn't for everybody. I don't know if you got the results back from your drunk IQ test that I suggested not to post, lol. I'm betting you are in the orange range, above average (>100). As I imagine would be most people on the board. Trouble is, for every smart person there's a dumb person in the population it's just a statistical thing. And they can't do what you did. They lack the hardware, so there's no point trying to offer them alternative software. You basically can't change IQ. It's set. So all those people, particularly between 70 and 85 need to be taken care of. They can actually be productive but they need simpler tasks. They also might need more mentoring and guidance into adulthood.

I know a bit about this, because it was part of my job. As a school psychologist I was the guy who got the dumb kids or the kids who couldn't concentrate or the kids failing their classes and didn't want to come to school. Often there are issues stemming from home abuse, parental break up or other socio-motional factors, but also sometimes they were just lacking in mental capacity. And I was the chap to tactfully measure this and break it to the school and break it to the parents (who are sometimes dumb themselves). I guess that's why I get impatient with people that maintain that those that don't want to go up the ladder are simply lazy. Sometimes it's the case, but sometimes they don't have the hardware - and never will. This notion that we are all born equal is a romantic one but not always true.

I should say it wasn't all glum. Overall IQ is divided into different parts. Often kids, particularly those with minority parents are lacking in verbal IQ, so they struggle to learn and fall behind due to poor receptive and expressive verbal skills. But their visuospatial and reasoning ears is normal or even above average. So they are smart. We can then find ways to accommodate that and get them back on track.

Also if we get kids assessed early we can get them sidetracked into an alternative learning streams early on. Nothing more satisfactory than seeing a kid that was heading for the trash can thriving and working in an appropriate apprenticeship to match their mental skillset.

This isn't just about IQ. Sometimes kids just hate academics. They get more satisfaction solving puzzles, doing things with their hands and dealing with real life tangible things.
