B-b-b-bird-bird-bird, the bird is the word...

Kimbrel used to be a lights out closer. I think he's still pretty good... isn't he? I was kinda hoping the Phillies would take a shot at signing him.

Maybe he'll do well for you, and you'll come to love the airing out of the armpits pose.

You could always send him some underarm deodorant in hopes that he'll stop.

McCutchen went down with a knee injury for the season. We picked up Jay Bruce to replace him. Bruce got a grand slam in his first game for us.

I would say he's somewhere between good and great, but far from the elite closer he once was. Arguably, he was the weakest link in the BoSox last year during the post season. He had some very rough outings.

True, but he had 42 saves. The explanation was that he was tipping pitches in the post season.

WTF Ortiz shot at nearly point-blank range in the back at Dominican Republic lounge

By Ryan Gaydos, Frank Miles | Fox News

Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was hospitalized Monday after being wounded in an ambush at a Dominican Republic bar, authorities said.

Ortiz was at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo on Sunday night when a gunman approached from behind and shot him at close range, Dominican National Police Director Bautista Almonte said.

Police said Ortiz was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery and was in stable condition.

Leo Ortiz, the 10-time All-Star’s father, told reporters his son was out of danger and there was no damage to his major organs. He said he has no idea why someone would shoot his son.

“He is out of surgery and stable; he is resting,” Leo Ortiz said. “Big Papi will be around for a long time.”

According to TMZ Sports, Ortiz told doctors: “Please don’t let me die. I’m a good man.”

The Red Sox released a statement on Ortiz, saying they offered his family “all available resources to aid in his recovery” and they will continue to keep them in their hearts.

The alleged gunman was captured and beaten by a crowd of people at the bar, Bautista said. He said police are waiting until the man undergoes treatment for the injuries he suffered at the hands of the crowd before questioning him. The man’s identity wasn’t released.

Investigators were still trying to determine whether Ortiz was the intended target. Two other people were wounded in the shooting, including TV host Jhoel Lopez. Ortiz and Lopez were wounded by the same bullet, authorities said.

Lopez suffered non-life threatening injuries. The third person wasn’t identified and their condition wasn’t released.

Ortiz, a three-time World Series champion, retired in 2016. He now works for the Red Sox in a variety of capacities.

He hit 541 home runs over his 20-year career. He also played for the Minnesota Twins.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

WTF Chilling new details emerge in the attempted murder of David Ortiz

    Mike Oz - Yahoo Sports

Six men are now in custody in the Dominican Republic tied to the attempted murder of baseball star David Ortiz, authorities announced Wednesday, saying it was a coordinated attack for which the men were allegedly paid the equivalent of $8,000.

Jean Alain Rodríguez Sánchez, the Dominican Republic’s chief prosecutor, spoke at a press briefing, indicating that authorities believe they have the alleged shooter in custody but are still pursuing one more suspect. They still haven’t announced a motive for the attack on Ortiz or who paid for it.

Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte, the director of the Dominican National Police, presented the black handgun allegedly used to shoot Ortiz on Sunday night outside of a popular nightspot in Ortiz’s hometown of Santo Domingo. It was the first time authorities confirmed publicly that the shooters were paid to target Ortiz.

Authorities say the attack on Ortiz was planned the night before. According to court documents obtained by The Boston Globe, the men believed to be part of the plot met again Sunday night with two cars and a motorcycle parked nearby.

Two men — including alleged shooter Ramón Martínez Perez, who goes by the name Rolfie and was named for the first time Wednesday — left on the motorcycle to attack Ortiz. The driver was 25-year-old Eddy Vladimir Feliz García, who lost control of the motorcycle, crashed and was detained and beaten by nearby citizens. Initial reports from the scene believed that García was the shooter.

The shooter escaped on foot, returned to the two vehicles and fled the scene. Witnesses were able to identify the cars and police tracked down Perez.

Among those in custody, according to The Globe, is Oliver Moisés Mirabal Acosta. Acosta, according to Dominican newspapers, was previously sentenced to prison time on an illegal gun charge and was accused of being part of four execution-style killings in 2013 that were tied to a local drug gang.

Ortiz, meanwhile, is in a Boston hospital, where his condition is improving, according to his family. His wife Tiffany Ortiz released the following statement Wednesday:

“David continues to recuperate today in the Intensive Care Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital under the direction of treating trauma surgeon Dr. David King.

“Yesterday and this morning, David was able to sit up as well as take some steps. His condition is guarded and he will remain in the ICU for the coming days, but he is making good progress towards recovery.

“My family and I again want to thank everyone for their endless love and well wishes, and still ask for privacy while David continues to heal.”
