Right now, my current bottle that I am working through is a Deanston 12yr old that I tried at a recent tasting. It's in the ballpark of a Balvenie, just not quite as good. Still, I like it for a change of pace.

And my whisky club just tried this on Friday night:

An Arran 10 year old finished in a bourbon cask. Not that great for the price in my opinion...

You know, everyone is talking about single malts and cask aging and other elements that cause changes to the taste of the Scotch. But, it's all gibberish to me. Anyone care to give me a '101' on this? I'm not a drinker but I'd like to know just for personal edification.

Dee I am an avid Scotch and Whisky drinker. I usually do not levitate toward the more floral and fruity palettes especially when talking about Scotches so you will typically find me drinking Islay Malts. My overwhelming favorite is Laphroaig Quarter Cask but all of the caskings by Laphroiag are wonderful.. The Islay Malts are typically a bit harsher than other malts with lots of smoke and peat and full bodied so its not for the novice drinker.

    My tasting notes:

Nose: Powerful smoke, sweet malt, and coal. Develops chocolate & cinnamon.

Palate: Full-bodied, rich, velvety and mouth-coating. Delicious thick malt and rich peat, woodsmoke. The coal appears mid-palate.

Finish: Very long, sweet and smoky, with the smoke lingering longest.

    Great with a cigar.

I find myself not much of a peat fan as of late... i used to think that was the flavor of all/most scotches, until i really started trying others. i find myself just not enjoying sipping a strong peat scotch versus very much enjoying those that are less peat and more sweet...

but that's the great thing about scotches. just trying stuff from different parts of the country gives you entirely different experiences

Laphroiag is not so much Peaty as it is Smokey. When you open the bottle its like opening a camp fire burn Oak wood.

Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Ardmore are all pretty good Islay malts as well. Laphroiag prides itself as being the most flavorful of all the Scotches and my taste buds agree.
