MATT MURRAY UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR ILLEGAL NET MANIPULATION

BY AARON ITOVICH - Hockey Patrol

This is truly just a ridiculous story. Matt Murray is under fire right now, for the third time this season, for net manipulation.

Essentially, Murray is being accused of purposefully loosening the net in order to be able to easily knock it off its posts. This would give the Leafs an obvious unfair advantage in high-danger situations.

While it couldn't be proven before, Murray couldn't resist playing with his goalposts mid-game yesterday. He was thus caught on camera in this incredibly incriminating clip:

This sparked NHL insider Michael Russo to clue us in to ongoing league investigations concerning the subject:

It was noticed in the Situation Room last night that Murray was wiggling the net during TV timeout. League is actually testing nets coming up but also clipping goalies taking nets off moorings and bringing examples to GM's Meeting in March. Murray's net came off twice last night

Whether Murray is confirmed to be cheating or not, he should probably be focussing on the game in front of him!

RIP Former New York Islanders fan favorite Gino Odjick dead at 52

By Andrew Crane - New York Post

Former Islanders winger Gino Odjick has died, his sister Dina shared on Facebook. He was 52 years old.

“Our hearts are broken,” Dina posted on her Facebook page. “My brother Gino Odjick has left us for the spirit world,” with two heart emojis attached to the end of her message.

Odjick suffered a heart attack at a Vancouver medical clinic, where he had gone to get leg bandages replaced, the Montreal Gazette reported.

He was diagnosed with amyloidosis in 2014, according to Sportsnet, and it “attacked his organs and his heart.”

The Islanders, Canucks and Canadiens — three teams that Odjick played with over his 12-year NHL career — released statements Sunday night after his death.

“The New York Islanders are deeply saddened to learn the passing of former family member, Gino Odjick,” the team said in a statement on Twitter. “The team extends our condolences to the Odjick family and friends.”

Odjick was acquired by the Islanders in 1998, when the Canucks traded him in exchange for Jason Strudwick, He spent parts of the next three seasons in New York. The winger played 13 games in 1997-98, 23 games in 1998-99 and 46 in 1999-2000 before the team dealt him to the Flyers. In 82 games total with the Islanders, Odjick compiled 22 points and 254 penalty minutes.

According to Sportsnet, Odjick holds the Canucks’ record for most penalty minutes in franchise history with 2,127. He led the NHL with 371 penalty minutes in 1996-97, a season when he played 70 of his 605 NHL games.

“Gino was a fan-favourite from the moment he joined the organization, putting his heart and soul into every shift on and off the ice,” Canucks chairman and governor Francesco Aquilini said in a statement. “He inspired many and embodied what it means to be a Canuck. Personally, he was a close friend and confidant, someone I could lean on for advice and support. He will be deeply missed.”

Ivan Provorov jerseys sell out online after he refuses to wear pride jersey

Jarryd Jaeger - The Post Millennial

Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Ivan Provorov made headlines for refusing to don a rainbow jersey for his team's "Pride Night" warmup on Tuesday, and since then his jersey has become a hot commodity.

The outsized media attention he received for standing up for his beliefs appears to have worked in his favor, with fans purchasing his jersey to publicly show their support.

According to Outkick, as of Thursday morning Provy's number 9 men's jersey was nearly sold out on both the NHL fan shop and Fanatics, with only the XS size available.

Provorov, who is a member of the Russian Orthodox Church, defended his decision following the game, which the Flyers won 5-2. "I respect everybody's choices," he said. "My choice is to stay true to my religion, that's all I'm gonna say."

When reporters pressed him further, he simply replied, "That's all I'm gonna comment on that. If you have any hockey questions, I would answer those."

Flyers coach John Tortorella stood up for his d-man, saying, "That's one thing I always respect about Provy, he's always true to himself."

Provorov was excoriated by members of the media, perhaps most vehemently by Breakfast Television's Sid Seixeiro.

He attacked Provorov for adhering to his religious beliefs, and went so far as to suggest that the Flyers should be hit with a million-dollar fine for his actions.

"Nothing scares me more than any human being that says 'I'm not doing this because of my religious beliefs', "Seixeiro said, visibly shaken. "When you look at people's lives who normally say that publicly, you'd throw up at what you saw."

The liberal sports media is all kinds of upset over this whole thing about him not wanting to wear that jersey.

If I was in the NHL, I'd wear that jersey. I'd prefer support the gay community quietly in a 'live and let live' kinda way, and don't personally feel the need to say/do anything outwardly to prove it... but if this small tribute meant something to someone who feels excluded from the game I love, that's cool with me and I'd wear it with my teammates.... That said, I don't have a problem with Proporov not wearing it. Torts is usually a headcase but his comments about it I think have been a beacon of rationality and show leadership as the coach defending Prop. The guy has said and done nothing disparaging or hateful, he hasn't hurt anyone, he's just one guy doing what he wants to do.

What I find most annoying, if that's the right word, is how polarized some folks are. If you're part of the gay community or some kind of virtue-signal 'ally' and are this upset, you're way too desperate for approval and that's your problem - accept that not everyone is going to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you about everything. In the same breath, I'd also say that if you're putting this guy on a pedestal as some hero for not wearing a jersey... again, you're probably way too desperate for acceptance and reinforcement. A lot of people are making way too much out of this IMHO

Also re: Gino. Such a beloved figure in Vancouver, thanks for posting that Lance. RIP. I have fond memories of watching that early 90's team sitting with my dad on the couch, they were a lot of fun and Gino was a great member of Canucks alum and the community.

It's been an unreal season so far. I just hope they don't just burn through the regular season setting records and then get bounced in the first round of the playoffs.

Actually unreal, every time I check the standing I'm flabbergasted at the Bruins record.
