See I don't get that. Lots of teams miss the playoffs, and half of the ones that get through lose in the first round. People are happy about that. Then you've got a team like Pittsburgh, wins the Cup, becomes a perennial contender, and they lose in the second round and dammit heads are gonna roll! Given that the rest of the league is watching from their couches, the team, the front office, and their fans should be happy they made it as far as they did.
I don't care who's on the team, you can't win all the time.

I'd agree if this was the first let-down since winning or almost winning a cup, but I don't think it's a knee-jerk reaction this year. Bylsma's been the coach with a pretty similar core for five seasons since they won their last cup which is a lifetime for a coach. In the last 5 years they've finished first or second in their division each year, but only won 4 rounds of playoffs total. That's pretty miserable when you have two franchise players in Crosby & Malkin, and some incredible supporting pieces. Simply not good enough for a team like this that doesn't have another 5-years together.Originally Posted by DemonGeminiX
This year especially the Pens showed no real killer instinct in the playoffs... the Blue Jackets gave them a scare, they should have finished off the Rangers ages ago.

So they fire the coach, get rid of some key players, then miss the playoffs for the next 10 seasons while trying to figure out what went wrong.

Or settle for a perennial underachiever in the playoffs because their star players aren't coached to limit ice time and they have no discernible system? A good GM shouldn't be afraid to make a coaching change and some roster moves to improve just because they're already good if the formula isn't working year after year.

Definitely, didn't even make it back to the finals even once in all those good years after winning the Cup.
