Really? Megan Rapinoe: U.S Women's Soccer Has 'Managed To Make People Proud Again'

    Hayley Miller, HuffPost

Megan Rapinoe, co-captain of the U.S. women’s national soccer team, said her squad’s dramatic and widely watched World Cup victory last week “managed to make people proud again.”

The 34-year-old forward, who skyrocketed to national fame in recent weeks for her incredible performance in the world soccer championship as well as her outspoken opposition to President Donald Trump, said Americans are tired of all the negativity.

“I think the opportunity is in everyone’s exhaustion of the fighting and the negative,” Rapinoe said during an appearance Sunday on NBC’s “Meet The Press” when asked about all the hype surrounding her team’s big win.

“Our team has managed to make people proud again, to capture people’s interest, to make them want to do something,” she added. “I think we’ve just managed to give people hope.”

Rapinoe, who is openly gay, has repeatedly accused the Trump administration of pushing policies that further threaten the rights of marginalized communities, such as LGBTQ people and immigrants. She made headlines last month when she told a reporter that she’s “not going to the fucking White House” if her team wins the World Cup.

“We’re not gonna be invited,” she added. “I doubt it.”

Trump quickly fired back at Rapinoe on Twitter, claiming she should first “WIN” the World Cup before talking about a White House invitation. Her team subsequently beat the Netherlands 2-0 last Sunday to win the championship.

“Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team,” the president said.

Rapinoe on Sunday called on her team’s fans to continue to take action on issues they’ve supported, including racial equality, LGBTQ rights and equal pay.

Asked if she’s considering a future run for political office, Rapinoe said she’s not sure she’s qualified to do so.

“There’s no qualifications for office these days,” host Chuck Todd told her.

“That’s true. Up to 44, I guess there was,” Rapinoe responded, an apparent jab at Trump’s total lack of political experience prior to becoming the 45th president of the United States.

She continued: “You know what? I’m going to fight for equal pay every day, for myself, for my team and for every single person out there ― man, woman, immigrant, U.S. citizen, person of color, whatever it may be ― equal pay, as the great Serena Williams said, until I’m in my grave.”

And that "writer" from HuffPost obviously knows nothing about the women's World Cup:

Megan Rapinoe, co-captain of the U.S. women’s national soccer team, said her squad’s dramatic and widely watched World Cup victory last week “managed to make people proud again.”

Dramatic? They were barely challenged the entire tournament and they were the HEAVY favorites the whole time.

Cool MLS returns July 8 with World Cup-style tournament in Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex

by Roger Gonzalez - CBS Sports

Major League Soccer will return from the COVID-19 shutdown on July 8 with a 54-match tournament that will span over the course of 35 days, the league announced on Wednesday. The MLS is Back Tournament will take place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, with no spectators. All 26 teams will be back in action in games that count toward the regular season standings. The winner of the tournament earns a spot at the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League and features 16 straight days of games in the group stage.

"We are pleased to team up with Disney to relaunch the 2020 MLS season and get back to playing soccer," MLS commissioner Don Garber said in a release. "The opportunity to have all 26 clubs in a controlled environment enables us to help protect the health of our players, coaches and staff as we return to play."

As CBS Sports reported on June 3, teams will arrive on June 24 for preseason training and COVID-19 testing and there will be a World Cup-style competition with six groups, a round of 16, quarterfinal, semifinal and final. There will be 54 total matches and 26 matchdays. Here are the dates to keep in mind:

    • July 8: Group stage begins
    • July 25-28: Round of 16
    • July 30-Aug. 1: Quarterfinals
    • Aug. 5-6: Semifinals
    • Aug. 11: Tournament final

In addition to there being a CCL berth on the line, players will also have the opportunity to earn additional bonuses as part of a $1.1 million prize pool, the league announced.

CBS Sports will update this story as more information becomes available.

LOL German soccer team loses 37-0 after social distancing on the field

Rex P. Dynamite - Not The Bee

A German amateur soccer team, SG Ripdorf, lost 37-0 on Sunday after having just 7 players on the field throughout the match. The team had feared contracting Covid-19 after their opponents, SV Holdenstedt II, had played against a team with an infected player the week prior.

Though the Holdenstedt II squad had all tested negative, the Ripdorf players did not want to play until after the 14-day incubation period was over. "We tried to postpone the match…but Holdenstedt wanted to play." Ripdorf co-chair Patrick Ristow told ESPN.

The team was able to field seven players (the minimum required) to avoid a €200 fine for abandoning the match.

Ristow told ESPN about their social distancing game strategy:

"When the game kicked off, one of our players passed the ball to the opponent and our team walked to the sidelines. Holdenstedt scored, but the referee booked our captain for unsportsmanlike conduct… for the rest of the match our players returned to the field but they only stood on the pitch."

My main question is this: How in the world did the other team only score 37 goals? I mean, I would have been doing some more hardcore stat-padding if it were me.

Fail U.S. fails to qualify for Tokyo Olympics, falls to Honduras in CONCACAF semifinals

By Sandra Herrera - CBS Sports

The U-23 U.S. men's national team once again failed to qualify for the Summer Olympics, after a 2-1 loss to Honduras during the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying semifinals on Sunday at Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara, Mexico. Juan Carlos Obregon and Luis Palma recorded goals for Honduras, while Jackson Yueill scored for the U.S..

The U.S. struggled during the first half to establish any type of tempo despite retaining possession and spending time on the ball. The team failed to make any meaningful attempts on goal as Honduras was able to disrupt passing lanes and counter on transition when opportunity provided and got solid looks on goal with David Ochoa making big saves to keep the game level.

A strong showing from Honduras out of the first hydration break ahead of halftime lead to a bit of shift in tempo for the team, as Obrgon scored the opening goal in first half stoppage time.

A demoralizing early second half goal by Honduras seemed to seal the USMNT's fate, as goalkeeper David Ochoa made a rare mistake in the match with a poor pass out of the back that Honduras striker Luis Palma punched on and scored the go-ahead early in the second half.

U.S. midfielder and team captain Jackson Yueill brought the team within one in the 52nd minute.

The goal shifted things for the U23 side, as strong flank play from Aaron Herrera helped generate attack for the team through the winding minutes. Despite more time in dangerous spaces, the team was unable to score an equalizer, as Honduras secured their spot in the Tokyo Olympics eliminated USA from the competition once again. The U-23 USMNT will be absent from a third consecutive Summer Olympics, having last qualified for Beijing 2008. Honduras also knocked the U.S. out of CONCACAF Olympic qualifying in the semifinals back in 2016.

Religion Iranian state TV censors Spurs vs Man Utd because Sian Massey-Ellis was wearing shorts

By Sam Webb - The Daily Star

Iranian broadcasters censored Sunday’s Premier League game between Manchester United and Tottenham because one of the assistant referees was a woman wearing shorts

The Islamic Republic’s state broadcaster cut away from the action more than 100 times so viewers would not see the bare legs of match official Sian Massey-Ellis, according to an Iranian civil rights group.

Hard-line Iranian authorities do not allow a woman with her hair uncovered and bare knees to be shown on state-run TV channels.

My Stealthy Freedom, a group that campaigns against discriminatory gender laws within Iran, wrote: “The television censors were rattled by the presence of a female referee in shorts. Their solution was to cut away from the action to views of London’s backstreets, which made a mockery of the game.

“At the end of the game, one of the commentators joked that he hoped the viewers enjoyed the geographic show.

“Censorship is in the DNA of the Islamic Republic of Iran. We should not normalise this practice. This is not our culture. This is the ideology of a repressive regime.”

In 2019, German media reported Iranian state broadcaster IRIB cancelled a screening of Bayern Munich's win over Augsburg because the referee in charge was a woman, Bibiana Steinhaus.

And segments of the 2018 World Cup draw broadcast were censored in Iran because authorities decided the clothing of co-host Maria Komandnaya – who appeared alongside Gary Lineker – was too revealing.

During the 2014 draw ceremony, Iranian TV cut out many parts of the broadcast because of the clothing worn by Brazilian TV host Fernanda Lima.

Massey-Ellis, a 35-year-old from Coventry, was at the centre of a sexism row in 2011 when Sky Sports commentators Richard Keys and Andy Gray were forced to leave the broadcaster after tapes were leaked of the pair making derogatory comments about her.

In the tapes, Keys said: “Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her Massey.

Gray replied: “Yeah, I know. Can you believe that? Female linesman. Forget what I said - they probably don’t know the offside rule.”

    "Course they don't," said Keys.

“Why is there a female linesman? Somebody’s f***ed up big,” Gray added.
