Cookies stolen from Fairfield Girl Scouts

FAIRFIELD, Ohio - Early Sunday morning, thieves smashed windows of four cars at a Fairfield apartment complex to get to the items inside. One of the cars had 166 boxes of Girl Scout cookies. The thieves took all of them.
Fairfield police are investigating the reports of four separate auto break-ins that happened between 4:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Car owners found a window broken on their car and items stolen from inside the vehicle.
For Erin Stoll, she and her twin daughters made the discovery when they were leaving for church on Sunday morning. The car window was broken and all 166 boxes of Girl Scout cookies were gone. The cookies were ready for delivery after the girls worked for weeks to complete their order. The dollar value of the cookies is $581. Stoll said she has car insurance, which covered the broken window, but it did not cover the stolen cookies. She was concerned she would have to pay for all of it out of her own pocket. Once girls pick up their cookies for delivery, it is their responsibility to pay for them. The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio Council is now working with the family and Troop #46899 to work out arrangements so the family will not have to pay for all of the stolen cookies and lost revenue.
Ann MacDonald, with Girl Scouts of Western Ohio said it is rare that someone steals from Girl Scouts. But it does happen on occasion.
"Life happens sometimes and so, we don't often see this because people really care about Girl Scouts," MacDonald said. "They care about what Girl Scouts do. This will be a learning experience for the whole troop.
The mission of Girl Scouts is to build courage, confidence, and character to help make the world a better place. The girls, in selling cookies, are learning about money earning, communication skills, they are learning about customer service and business ethics."
In this situation, the girls are learning a harsh life lesson that, sometimes, bad things happen. MacDonald said what is important is what the girls and her mom did after the crime. She said they called police and that was the correct thing to do.
Troops earn about $.55 per box for the cookie sales. The boxes sell for $3.50. Through their cookie sales, the troops also earn the resources of the Girl Scout Council and the many camps made available to troops.
