It can't be as bad as the second and third Toby Maguire movies... that doesn't mean I'm going to see this though.
Richard and Mary Parker were Peter's parents. They were CIA spies working under Nick Fury on a mission when they were assassinated.
In the Ultimate Universe version of the comic book, Richard Parker was a scientist working on a cure for cancer when he and his wife died. I can't remember the circumstances of their death in the ultimate universe.

Marvel did this whole back story edition of comic book characters a while ago. They had a whole backstory on Peter's parents and Uncle Ben and Aunt May, how they met, what their jobs were, yadda yadda yadda.
The story goes that Peter was left with Uncle Ben and Aunt May when his parents went out on missions when Peter was a little kid, and one day they never came back. Ben and May were given the bad news and they adopted Peter and raised him. The back story details changed in the Ultimate universe, like everybody else's stories did.
I thought they had died, according to the original Spiderman legend...
Well they did, but until Marvel released the backstory comics, no one really knew why or how.
