Discussion Saving my cash for the ideal car

Just wondered if anyone is doing the same as me...saving up to buy another car. I have always wanted a Ford Mustang, and the particular model I like is the 2005-2009 one. The newer ones would be good, too, but I don't think I can afford them, so used I must go.

I'm hoping to get my ideal car -- a 2009 GT with a glass roof. So, I've now just got ourselves out of any debt (except for the house, and even then I'm half way paid off) and I'll try and save from now on to afford it. I'm very anti-debt so I want to buy the thing mostly with cash so this will take a few years.

I know the 2011s and above have greater Horsepower and 2010 and above has the restyle that isn't bad looking, but I think I like the slightly earlier ones better. However the pre 2005 ones do nothing for me...except for the Fox bodied ones...but I can't see myself getting one of those and I'd prefer newer.

I presently have a 1992 Nissan NX 2000 that I've had since new, and put 315,000 kms onto. I tend to keep my cars for a looooong time, so I will probably have this Mustang for 20 years which puts me at 65years of age when the thing will be as old and decrepit as I am!

When I was young (27) and foolish, I saved a little bit and paid for my NX with mostly credit...I think it was a 9% loan and for 15 grand, and the payments were $289 a month. Couldn't do that now! Not with a wife and kids to support.

Anybody know about future values...what my dollar in '92 would be worth today etc.?

Haven't got a clue what a Nissan NX 2000 IS much less what it's worth. Sorry.

I too like the body style of the 05-09 Mustangs. I personally don't like the glass roofs, but each to his own. I would say another option to look for is the Shaker 1000 stereo system (the shaker 500 is nice, but the 1000 is the best factory audio system I've ever heard)
I would definitely get one with a manual as well. If I buy another play toy, it will probably be an 09 ( I don't like the 10 and up front and rears, but the interior is NICE) and swap in the coyote 5.0

No prob. Nissan Sentra with a coupe body like a Celica and a 2.0. With the mods I've done to it (intake, new exhaust, better front struts, Japanese imported engine), it's probably about as fast as the car Goofy is contemplating. Might be worth $2,500 now.

What I was really wondering is what 15,000 1992 dollars would be worth in today's money. You know, economic forecasting and all that...

I would say another option to look for is the Shaker 1000 stereo system (the shaker 500 is nice, but the 1000 is the best factory audio system I've ever heard)
The 500 is what I have in my '05 Ford Freestar - sounds nice. I think the 1000 is similar, but with 2 subs in back with a separate power amp.

I would definitely get one with a manual as well. If I buy another play toy, it will probably be an 09 ( I don't like the 10 and up front and rears, but the interior is NICE) and swap in the coyote 5.0
I want a manual bad, but my wife won't contribute to the project unless it's Automatic. Oh well, the things you do for family harmony! That's a good plan - newest of the older body style. With the way I keep cars, I'll get one and drive it 'til the engine needs replacing, then replace it with a Coyote. That's what I did with the NX. Instead of the factory 140hp 2.0 4, it now has something like 180hp out of some car we can't get here in N America.

I bought the NX brand new in '92 for 15K. 2K for a new transmission, 2K for the Japanese spec engine, and regular maintenance (2 oil changes a year, once a year tune ups - say 1K for each year) so the old thing doesn't really owe me anything.

Worst escapade...being clocked in the U.S. passing cars on a hill at 90mph (in a proper passing lane!)

MINZ - want to import a mini-van? Yours free if you'll ship it over to the UK. I can't sell it and it has 340,000kms but runs great and doesn't use oil between changes. I have to drive it to a scrap metal place where they'll give me $300 for it on Monday.

What could you buy in 1992 for $15000 that's stood the test of time and is still available today (as an updated model) and how much does it currently cost?
