Easter Island is one of those places I'd really like to visit someday, I think it would be cool as fuck to see those things close up.

part of me doesn't believe this.....no one has attempted to excavate around the heads for 1000 years?
Maybe the indigenous people wouldn't give their permission.

Yeah I read the link and looks very legit...I just can't believe that with all of the people trying to figure out how the heads got on the island, that no one has discovered this before.
Next question - Why were they buried up to their shoulders? A form of punishment?

I have a wee bit of geophysical background...if they were created between 1250 and 1500 AD, that's only about 500 - 750 years ago. Layers of earth would only comprise approximately 5 inches to one foot over that time with erosion and other normal elements.
Those things look to be about 20 feet tall
Unless it was some catastrophe like an earthquake or volcano....but that wouldn't explain why the heads are visible and how they're so uniform. Very puzzling indeed
Maybe the Moai just did it themselves... maybe they were walking around one day and said, "Hey, this looks like a nice spot" and dug themselves down into the Earth.

Those suckers were buried on purpose...they're excavating soil and earth, not digging through lava.
As if the heads weren't a big enough mystery, now we gotta figure out why they were buried up to their necks??!!!
