My mom was one of the volunteers in our local hospital who was on the "knitting team" who made those hats. They're usually handmade by the women's auxilary of the hospital using kind-of expensive but usually donated special yarn that won't scratch baby.
Hand them back to the hospital when she grows out of it - so many of those are thrown away and hardly ever used, as the kid grows so quick!
