Border Patrol: Smugglers Use Cannon To Launch Cans Of Marijuana Into US

YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — U.S. Border Patrol agents say smugglers have come up with yet another creative way to get drugs in the country — a cannon.

Authorities say 33 cans of marijuana were spotted Friday in a field near where the Colorado River crosses the U.S.-Mexico border. They believe the cans were launched about 500 feet into the U.S. using a pneumatic-powered cannon.

After searching the area, agents recovered a carbon dioxide tank.

Mexican authorities were also notified and searched their side of the border.

The 85 pounds of marijuana found in the cans had an estimated value of $42,500.

Authorities say Border Patrol agents in the Yuma sector near the Arizona-California border are adapting and shifting resources as smugglers come up with new ways of transporting their contraband.

number one - you can't hit people, cars, livestock
number two - you have to collect all of your canisters

Well the border between the US and Mexico is pretty desolate in most areas, they would have no problem doing it without being caught. I bet they had been doing it for a long time up until now.

it's inventive but seems cumbersome in terms of collection and movement ( the weed canisters, not Lance's patrols )

The cannon was probably mounted in the back of a truck, all they need to do is fill the gas canister, probably only takes an hour to launch the 30 cans, and you dont have to pay someone to smuggle it. Just have your guys on the other side to pick it up. I dont know how they cam up with 40k on 85 lbs of dirt weed, but it seems cost effective to me. Driving through border patrol you are more then likely getting caught.
