I firmly believe the worst of the divide started with Obama. Not necessarily his policies (they were bad enough) but the facts that he was Islamic, had never held a job etc. His absolutely atrocious record in Chicago, and the right started getting pissed off, while the left thought he was a deity. Good or bad opinions aside, the man was and still is very polarizing. Now we have somewhat the opposite in Trump. The right adores him, and the left have literally lost their collective minds. Huge difference is that Trump, like him or not, has been a very successful businessman and knows how to not only get things done, but to delegate what he cant. I believe he honestly had know idea how bad the corruption in DC is (corruption, Elitism, NWO, globalism, calling what you like)
