generally it is taken out of your pay check based on expectations for how much you will owe based on last years taxes. then you file to see how accurate that estimate is and either pay in more if short or get a refund. i generally err on the side of having too much with held so that i get a refund instead of needing to find the money in april if i am short

Except there are so so many "refundable" tax credits (you get the money even if you don't owe any) that it's used as income redistribution. And the lower income brackets pay zero to begin with. Lower income folks are a net drain on the tax system. And it's not even lower income any more. I know a single mom of 2 that makes $45k plus and got a $15,000 refund. Like... what??

Yep, been ranting about this for decades. If you get a check for MORE than you paid in, its not a fucking return!!!!

Summary: the incumbent is Scot Morrison. right wing, charismatic and was a salesperson in his earlier life. He knows how to insert the right soundbite at the right time. Proudly religious.

However people are getting a bit sick of him and he has developed a reputation for being dishonest and ruthless, even from his own party.

His opponent is nowhere near as charismatic. A bit of a dufus left wing establishment politician.

Polls are saying that the incumbents are going to lose, but we had that same situation 4 years ago and the right-wing, led by Morrison ( incumbents ) won. We suspect when people are called up they say they're not going to vote for incumbent Morrison because they are embarrassed, but in the end they do because the right are strong on economy and defence.
