RIP Founding Slayer Guitarist, Jeff Hanneman, Dies

Grammy-winning guitarist Jeff Hanneman, a founding member of the heavy metal band Slayer, died Thursday of liver failure in Southern California, the band said in a statement.

    He was 49.

"Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11 a.m. this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure," the band said in a statement posted on its website and Facebook page.

Hanneman leaves behind his wife, Kathy, a sister and two brothers.

"He ... will be sorely missed," the band said.

The guitarist was with Slayer from its founding in 1981. Its breakthrough came five years later with the release of "Reign in Blood," an album that included two songs -- "Angel of Death" and "Raining Blood" -- co-written by Hanneman.

That was one of 10 studio albums that the band put out over three decades together, during which they performed thousands of shows.

On Slayer's official website, Hanneman said that the last one -- "World Painted Blood" -- came together quickly because the band's members worked seamlessly.

"The interaction between all of us on this record was really something special," he said. "... The chemistry was just good."

In 2006 and 2007, Slayer won Grammy awards for best metal performance.

Hanneman had been on hiatus from Slayer since 2011 ever since contracting necrotizing fasciitis, likely from a spider bite, and had been temporarily replaced by Exodus guitarist Gary Holt while he rehabilitated.

The metal world -- in tweets from, among many others, the bands Rancid, Hatebreed, In Flames and Testament -- reacted to Hanneman's death with sadness and appreciation, referring to him as a "true heavy metal legend" and a "brother in thrash."

"Jeff Hanneman will always be a metal god," wrote rocker Andrew WK. "A true master, he gave energy and excitement to millions, and will continue to. #PartyForSlayer."

The news also spurred thousands of diehard fans to comment about Hanneman on Slayer's Facebook page.

Wrote one: "One of the best shredders ever to walk Earth. RIP, good sir."

    Culled from various sources.

Man, I am so bummed about this.

Notice Jeff Hanneman, co-founder of Slayer, dies of liver failure following spider bite

Musician died of liver failure while recovering from a skin-eating condition he contracted after being bitten by a spider

American guitarist Jeff Hanneman, a co-founder of the heavy metal band Slayer, died in southern California on Thursday, the band said in a statement posted on their website. He was 49.

"Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure," the band said.

The guitarist had been recovering from a spider bite which had left him with necrotising fasciitis, a flesh-eating disease which attacks subcutaneous tissue.

Hanneman founded Slayer with fellow guitarist Kerry King in the early 1980s in suburban Los Angeles.

The band was known as one of the "big four" thrash metal groups of the 1980s, along with Anthrax, Megadeth and Metallica.

Hanneman is best known as a writer of the songs Raining Blood and Angel of Death from the 1986 album Reign in Blood, which is considered a landmark of the thrash genre.

Fellow musicians took to Twitter to express their grief. Slash, guitarist with Guns'n'Roses, said: "Tragic & shocking news about Jeff Hanneman. He is going to missed by so many. What a sad day for Metal. RIP man", while Andrew WK said "Jeff Hanneman will always be a metal god. A true master, he gave energy and excitement to millions, and will continue to."

Hanneman is survived by his wife, Kathy, and three siblings.

Well, here's a little interesting fact I stumbled across: It looks like the Westboro Baptist Church wants to protest Jeff Hanneman's funeral. I don't think they know exactly what they're fucking with. If some of Slayer's more hardcore fans show up, they'll kill those WBC protesters.

The results of the autopsy came back. He had permanent scarring of the liver. Cirrhosis. He drank himself to death.
