My new bluray player is here.

Now I need a multimeter so I can take apart the old one...

    Wouldn't a screwdriver work better.

I have screwdrivers, I'm not using the multimeter to take it apart. I have to test the potentiometers on the bluray optical drive to see if the pots' resistance is set correctly. That's what the multimeter's for. It's no use taking the thing apart if I have nothing to test it with.

I put a bluray disc in the old one, but the disc wouldn't play. Now I'm gonna find out why by myself, since I tried contacting Panasonic's customer service and they've proven to be completely useless and wouldn't even respond to my inquiry. If I can get away with making an adjustment or two to the old one and get a bluray disc to play in it, I'm going to give the old player to a family member

The moral of this story? Stay away from Panasonic, children.

You have a tech manual with settings for pots? That's cool. Last one I had go bad, the actual "laser" in the optical drive went bad.

No, I just read some instructions online and watched some videos on youtube and they said the resistance shouldn't be any higher than 1000 ohms, and should be as close to 800 ohms as possible.

Okay, without getting too technical, those settings are with the pot soldered onto the board, right? In that case, you wouldn't just be ohming the pot, you'd be getting the impedance of all other devices on the circuit as well.
At any rate, good luck, have fun, and set up a video recorder so we can all lol when it smokes, lol
