I just read an article on cheaper than dirt about choosing a caliber and thought to myself "Do I really need to go to a range and shoot every caliber under the sun?"

Heckler and COCK.
What kind of background do you have with handguns?
Knowing what I do about you, I'd suspect your grip strength is great so physically, I doubt you'd have much problems with any of the big 3 (9mm, .40 S&W, or .45ACP) I have a >40 currently, but am in the market for a 9mm. Ammo is waaaaay cheaper on 9mm.
I'm kind of a throw back as I'm not a fan of the modern composite lightweight semi auto pistols. I like a nice heavy all steel pistol. Then again, I don't now, or plan to carry a pistol all day, so weapon size and weight isn't really an issue.
Best bet, though I know you don't want to really, is find a local range that rents guns, and try a few different ones out. Lacking that, borrow a buddy's'.
One of my good buddies invited some people up to his parent's beautiful cabin on the west coast this coming long weekend. Started as just a half dozen of us, but has now ballooned out of control to 19 people
It's going to be an insane weekend. Wasn't really interested in that kind of thing, but I'll go along with it. Always some good stories afterwards.
