Unfortunately you are correct. I'm a separation of church and state kinda guy. But I know there is no way someone can get elected in this country without the backing of the bible belt.

The problem with the religion slant in politics, especially on the republican side, is that to win in the primaries, you have to come off as a bible thumping fire and brimstone Christian or else you won't have a prayer of winning in the uber conservative states. Then, if you do make it thru the primaries and become the nominee, you have to move all the way back to the center to have any shot at the general election. That's why people like Trump, Herman Cain last election, Chris Christie, and the like would have no shot because they aren't religious enough for the far right wing republicans that come out to vote in the primaries. It sucks, it's time for the mainstream part of the republican party to tell all the religious zealots to go pound sand.

Or for everyone else to actually vote in primaries... I have a hard time blaming the religious right for actually showing up.

Barely 50% of the electorate turns out for the general election, how on earth are you going to get more people to vote in the primaries? For the record, I vote in every election, from federal to municipal.

All I was saying was there's another way to look at it other than they cater to the religious right. They cater to the people who show up (same reason they move center in the general).

So perhaps they don't have the option to tell them to go pound sand unless they can change the demographics of primary voters. Well they could, but they'd lose, so what would be the point?

Maybe if they didn't cater to the religious zealots, perhaps more people would go vote.

And another problem with the republican party? Social issues....leave YOUR personal thoughts and preferences on social issues out of the election. I don't want YOU telling me what I should think or feel anymore than you would want me telling you how to think or feel. All I care is can you run the country and at least start to get us out of this financial mess we're in and will you stand up for, respect, and defend the Constitution of the United States. End of.

That's another problem with the electorate, they vote on social issues. I certainly don't think the D's are any better in that regard.
