but for a quick chili-dog meal I am not making chili from scratch. There are a lot of varieties now and some better brands. Chili Man is pretty good.

I'm kinda limited with the brands down here, but I take my can of Hormel and throw in some ground meat and a can of tomato sauce or paste, some onion, garlic, and chili powder, maybe some cayenne powder and some paprika, some hot sauce... because Hormel really really needs help.... like really bad.

at that point, what's the reason for including hormel in the first place?

It's a semi-good base. It cuts down on several hours of preparation as opposed to starting from scratch. Proper chili is a time intensive endeavor. It takes a while if you want to get it right when working from nothing.
