Maybe... just maybe, America has a mental health crisis, being masked by a fascination with mass shootings?

You're right. I need more practice.

You're right. I agree whole-heartedly. There is a mental health crisis in the USA. There's a lot of people walking around with undiagnosed psychological disorders. There are a lot of people walking around with diagnosed psychological disorders that are left untreated. These people shouldn't be within a country mile of a firearm... or any potentially dangerous object for that matter.

It's the same up here. My cousin is a cop (I feel the need to mention he's a great guy, zero ego), and says a huge chunk of his job is babysitting people who are destroyed by mental illness and/or drug addition.
The city just decided to built a suicide barrier all up and down the two big bridges going from the north shore of Van to the central part... meanwhile there's nowhere for people with real mental illness really to get long-term care. How is that a solution? It's good money after bad. Gun control is only one small piece of the puzzle. If people want to kill them self, yes there's an immediacy when you have a gun, but I really wonder what impact gun control has on suicide rates overall.
probably not much. if people are motivated to kill themselves, they will get it done eventually
But mental illness is such an intangible thing. There are more cases where you can't just look at someone and say, "Wow, that dude's seriously disturbed and needs help badly" as there are cases that you can. There are some really charismatic to normal looking people that are so messed up in the head that if we could read their minds, we'd lose our shit at the kinds of things that they seriously think about on a regular basis. And for that matter how do you force someone into getting evaluated? How do you force them into treatment? The basic idea behind civil rights forbids it. It's a Catch-22.

True. It's a real mess. There's no blanket solution.

I don't see any gun control correlation in those numbers. France is tight and has a higher suicide rate than the US. The UK is tight and it's half of France.
Anecdotally, it impacts lethality here. The male suicide death rate is far higher than the female rate in the US. But the female attempt rate is higher. That's most often attributed to method. Men prefer guns, women use less violent methods like pills.
Ironically, those stats show low suicide rates in Muslim countries. We need more virgins.
