Had to go to the kid's Christmas choir concert last night. Was kind of silly having it in mid-January, but it got canceled back in December because of snow. I was expecting the worst, but it was actually better than I thought it was going to be.

Before Primus, Claypool and Primus guitarist Larry LaLonde were both in a late 80s thrash metal band called Blind Illusion. They released one album in '88, then jumped ship and formed Primus in '89. Preceding that, LaLonde was one of the guitarists of one of the US's first Death Metal bands, the Possessed.

I still have the first two Possessed albums, Seven Churches and Beyond the Gates. LaLonde played on both of them, as well as the Eyes of Horror ep, which was produced by LaLonde's guitar teacher, Joe Satriani.

His students included Kirk Hammett of Metallica, David Bryson of Counting Crows, Kevin Cadogan from Third Eye Blind, Larry LaLonde of Primus and Possessed, Alex Skolnick of Testament, Rick Hunolt (ex-Exodus), Phil Kettner of Lääz Rockit, Geoff Tyson of T-Ride, Charlie Hunter, David Turin and Eric Kauschen.

More than that. There was a list of the names of his famous students online a while back, but I can't find it anymore. The list was mindbogglingly long. You'd look at it and wonder how the guy ever found time to cultivate his own music career. Satch is freakin' amazing.
