Looks like we're going to have to replace the hot water heater now a month after having replaced the furnace.

You want it all but you can't have it.

The perils of buying a house that other people have lived in. At least you can feel secure in knowing that the stuff you replace will last you a little while, assuming you've done your research on the item in question and the people installing it aren't trying to rip you off.

Might try doing it myself, although I really don't like fucking around with gas. I'm going to take a look at it closer this weekend and see if it's something I want to do myself. A lot cheaper going to Lowe's or Home Depot and getting a water heater and installing it myself.

It's in your face but you can't grab it.

I wouldn't mess with gas on my own, but that's just me. If you can do it, then by all means.

You should look into the on-demand HW units. A little more pricey but you have endless hot water and they are more efficient.

Do your research, not all brands are equal. Also if you can find a tank that's EXACTLY the same height it makes it a lot easier to DIY. If you have to relocate the gas or water lines it is a lot bugger project.

Oh trust me, I would buy a good brand. The furnace we just replaced and the water heater we have now are both 'off' brands that I've never heard of. I was looking at the Rheems on the Home Depot site to get an idea of prices. I will definitely take a look at where the lines are and the size of the tank before I buy, good advice that I didn't even think of before. But, I still may call a plumbing company to come and do it if I can get a good price. Like I said, I really don't like fucking around with gas.

I have the gas company coming in this week to do an inspection, then a private company to clean the furnace. It's over 50 years old and the private guy said they all develop cracks after 25 years due to how they were made. I just want to ensure it's not leaking CO and hoping we don't have to replace it like you did. The only 'bad' symptom is that the furnace is running too often throughout the day like it can't attain the heat the thermostat is asking for. On the plus side, the private guy is really interested in helping and said that old Coleman furnaces are built like tanks. If he can save it, he will.
