How come all engineers (at least the ones I deal with) are ignorant when it comes to real world applications?

Our engineers have to go out into the plants we sell stuff at and put their money where their mouths are.

I think if you're going to school to become an engineer, it should be required that to get your degree, you need to spend 6 months to a year out in the field to see how the real world works.

We do a lot of work with the Colorado School of Mines which is a pretty prestigious school and all the students that are there getting their Masters and PhD's maybe super smart when it comes to book smarts, but when it comes to everything else, they're dumber than a box of rocks. No common sense and no real world skills in the field they are studying.

Are they not required to do internships to graduate? I know Georgia Tech requires that most of the engineering majors do internships every other semester starting in their junior year. GaTech engineering bachelors typically graduate in 5 years.

No idea what their programs are like, but all I know is that the engineering students (and even some of the professors there) don't see to understand how things work in a machine shop.
