No. The batteries are fine. I tested them with a battery tester. They've got juice.

First the up arrow button stopped working. Then the 5 and 8 numeric keys went kaput. Now the whole thing is dead.

The battery tester?

Yeah, I have a little device (that's pretty old actually) that has three terminals on the top: a single terminal for a 1.5V battery and two terminals for a 9V. There's also a wand attached via a wire a little thicker than earbud wires. You put the positive end of the AAA/AA/C/D battery on the 1.5V terminal and place the wand on the negative end of the battery. There's 3 lights and they light up according to how much juice you have left in the battery. If it's new, all three lights light up solid, if it's slightly used then 2 lights light up and the third may or may not flicker, and so on...

Your battery tester is bad and giving you a false positive and the batteries are really and so it's just batteries. Occam's Razor, duh

So after waiting on the phone for an hour, I get to speak to a tech rep from my cable company and after a few minutes of conversation, he agrees to send me a new remote controller. I ask him what I should do with the messed up one, if the company would want it back, and he says no, I can do anything I want with it. He suggested that I use it as a door stop. After I get off the phone with him, I check the remote out and disassemble it. I blew a can of compressed air over everything and cleaned the circuit board with a cotton ball loaded with isopropyl alcohol. Put it back together and put batteries back in it. And wouldn't you know? The fucker works again.
