I guess that explains Gibson guitars. They're made exactly the same way as Epiphones... in fact, Gibson owns and makes the Epiphones, but where the Epiphones rarely cost above $800, the "high end" Gibsons can run you upwards of $6000. They use the exact same woods, hardware, and methods. But Epiphones are CNCed in Asia, and Gibsons are CNCed in the USA.

It's the headstock, lol. I've picked up many of the mid to high end epi les Paul's. They all felt good, and sounded good, but for $800, my made in us gibby les paul just feels better. Maybe it's the thin satin nitro finish, maybe it's the neck profile, or maybe it's in my head, shrug. I dunno. I do know that my gibby studio 335 is not as nice a feel as the epi, or even ibanez, but it sounds better.

I had a similar experience. I placed a product in a higher end catalog retailing at $1300. They had another product with the same basic function for $400. I outsold the other one every quarter. Came to the same conclusion, perceived value for non-price-sensitive consumers.

Absolutely shameful...what you should have done is take the money that was over and above what the lower priced one was selling for and given it to people not making enough money. Capitalism is a hideous system.

I wish I was the one who benefited from that. The powerful catalogs used to set their margin requirements for placement (I assume it has changed). Often it was a 200% markup (cost of good sold @ 33% of retail). Meet their demands or fuck off. I just decided I wasn't lowering the margin on my end and rolled the dice with the price point. I guarantee you, the other guy sold his soul to make pennies (or take a loss) just to get the placement.

But yes, that used to be the equation. $1300 retail meant the catalog paid $429. I got my Korean factory cost down to ~$250, wanted to always wholesale at $500, but had to give up margin sometimes for volume.

That is why the internet killed catalogs. It's not just the medium, it's the margins.

If it's above $50, it costs too much. It's really not worth hiring someone to do. What I should do is get my brother-in-law to come up here and install it. He and my sister are the one's that bought it.
