I had to go the long way around to avoid it this morning. I guess they are looking into the cause, which appeared to be a semi that lost his brakes coming down out of the mountains. The area where it happened is near where it starts becoming flat again after a long descent from the mountains, and it's a long downhill run and steep and here at work, especially in the nice weather when the doors are all open, we can smell hot/burning brakes all the time. Even this morning on the way in I saw a semi pulled over and there was smoke coming from his brakes. They are saying it ivolved at least 12 passenger vehicles and 3 semis.
Update on this...ended up being 28 vehicles (24 passenger vehicles and 4 semis) involved in the crash and 4 dead. The driver is a 23 year old Cuban National here on a green card. The trucking company he drives for is based out of Houston and they are a small company running 5 trucks. In less than the past 2 years, they have been cited with more than 30 violations, 10 of which are brake problems with their trucks. Even worse, 2 of the violations are for employing drivers that don't know enough English to read highway and traffic signs (which legally you must be able to if you want to drive in the US). What makes this important is that there's video of him before the accident, approximately 5 or so miles back up the mountain showing him blowing past a runaway truck ramp and almost running a pickup truck off the road. He had lost control of his vehicle that far back and he didn't even make an effort to use the runaway truck ramp.

Wow. I hope people go to jail. Driverless semis anyone?

Did the driver die or did he survive?

He survived with only minor injuries. He's currently being held in the county jail on a $400K bond. He already had a preliminary hearing this past Saturday. He is due back in court this Friday to be formally charged with 4 counts of vehicular manslaughter plus whatever else the DA comes up with.

Good. It also makes me shake my head. A reckless drug rep can't be charged with reckless homicide. Funny lines we draw.

My neighbor's golden retriever is beautiful. And he's a good boy, too.

Well I had to get myself excused from jury duty as my granny's funeral is next Monday. Glad they let me out of it, but I'm selfishly kind of disappointed, I was curious to see what jury duty would be like.

Alright I don't know shit about auto racing, never watched a race in my life, but the wife and I flicked on Formula 1: Drive to Survive on Netflix and we're hooked. Really well documented, tells the story of various teams and drivers. Highly recommend it to everyone.

It's interesting to do once, but it makes for a loooooooong day. I'm not sure though how much jury selection differs in Canada from here in the US.

The driver up here who caused the deaths of 16 people got eight years. The sentence was considered one of the highest for involuntary manslaughter ever.

" Jaskirat Singh Sidhu of Calgary had pleaded guilty in January to 29 counts of dangerous driving for killing 16 people and injuring 13 others on the junior hockey team's bus.The 30-year-old stood quietly and looked at the judge as he was sentenced. His punishment includes a 10-year driving ban. He also faces deportation to his home country of India after he serves time. "

His boss who ran the trucking company and was found guilty of not providing adequate training was fined 5000 dollars They showed his family crying because he may lose his business...

The driver who caused the wreck here apparently barely speaks English and made a Facebook post in Spanish (thru his family) saying what's going on with him being in jail and facing charges isn't right.

Today's edition of conversations with my wife...

Me: Can you believe 10 people are going to the musical for your birthday? People love every event we plan apparently!!
    Her: You think so?
Me: They all came to our last event! Every single one!
    Her: That was our wedding.
Me: I don't think that's it. They just love our event planning.
    Her:
I wanted to be a Monk, but I never got the chants.
