I don't know what made this story pop back into my head today but...

Back when I was in high school, I worked at a gas station/local garage. We were right off the exit on the interstate and we were basically the last stop for gas if you were going north into Canada and the first stop for gas when you were coming back into the States. We were about 7 miles from the Canadian border. In the summer, we would get lots of tourists and whatnot, just because of the interstate. Either people going to Canada on vacation, or Canadians coming the the US, or even lots of Canadians coming down for cheap gas and cigarettes, even though back then the exchange rate was somewhere around 30%. So during tourist season (summer thru fall) we'd get lots of people coming and going, and lots of people would ask for directions if they were headed somewhere in particular. And the rest of this is going to sound made up, but it's the absolute truth and if it hadn't happened to me, even I wouldn't believe it

Some guy pulled in and I was out picking up trash or something in the yard. He calls me over and says he needs directions. He's unfolding a map on the hood of his car. I figure it's gotta be a map of Vermont or possibly New York (we were only about 20 miles from the New York border to the west) or maybe even Quebec. I get up to his car and it's a full map of the United States and he asks me, with an honest to goodness straight face and I know he wasn't trying to screw with me just by the look on his face, as he point to the map and says, where am I? I do look at him for a minute though still because I really still wasn't sure if he was being serious, but he was. So I point to Vermont on the map and he says "just a sec" and goes into his car and comes back with another map. As he unfolds this one, this time it's a map of Vermont and he again asks where he is. So I show him, he's thankful, folds up his maps and leaves.

There's still part of me all these years later that wonders if I had pointed to a different state, like New Hampshire or New York or even Maine or Massachusetts, would he have believed me and thought that's where he was?
