I need to start doing my own taxes. Paying somebody $200 to tell me I'm getting back $32 total, federal and state, just isn't making me very happy.

I can't believe the medical shit I went through last year, and what I paid for it, didn't amount to jack shit. I slaughtered the catastrophic deductible last year.

I kinda like doing my taxes. What I hate is getting all the documents organized from work, banks, etc. But once that is done and you have it all laid out in front of you, I'm not going to just give it to someone else and pay them to just copy the lines from the tax forms into a program I can use for free. It's intimidating if you haven't done it before, but I'm absolutely confident you could do it.

Even if you are doing a 1040 or 1040A there is no need to have an accountant do it or pay someone like H&R Block to do it. The online sites walk you through every single step.

Ya eh, so true. I should've expanded on that. My wife is essentially an independent contractor as a physician. She has about 5 income sources, and I have no clue what is reasonable to write off or how to optimize her return so we use an expensive accountant for her. I should've mentioned but I fully believe in paying an accountant to do it for you if your taxes are complex because in those scenarios they can save you a ton.

I get paid out of more than a dozen companies under our umbrella, a few are on payroll with taxes taken out, the rest are 1099. Plus there's the other independent stuff I do on my own. It makes a bit of a mess come tax day.
