Man arrested after asking repair shop to restore his missing child porn images

If you take your computer into the shop for repair, then discover that some of your child porn is missing, it's probably a good idea to ignore it and move on. Ian Hartley didn't take that advice.

The repair incident occurred last year, with the raid by Chesapeake police, ICE and FBI agents, the Virginia State Police and Newport News police taking place on Dec. 6. They found six computers, including two recently repaired laptops, plus four cameras and several cell phones.

In order to repair the laptops, the computer store employee had to backup the contents of the computer's entire hard drive and later restore it. The employee did not initially see the images, but after Hartney received his computers back, he discovered that some of his images were missing.

Hartney called the repair shop to ask if the technician could find them. Now, to be clear, he didn't say, "Hey, some of my child porn pictures are missing!" However, when the technician searched the files that she had saved off of his computer, she discovered the child pornography and immediately called authorities.

If in fact the shop had deleted the images, the case might never have come to the attention of the authorities.

Of the images on Hartley's laptops, authorities have managed to identify seven female victims thus far. They are continuing to attempt to identify the other victims. John P. Torres, special agent in charge of the ICE Washington region, said in a statement, "One of our main priorities is to identify and assist any additional potential victims."

Although the raid occurred last year, Hartley wasn't arrested until early May.

This reminds me of this one guy that owns his own forum and would stop in at one of the forums I worked at. Someone had posted the "Tracy I Love You" movie, the only one that is legal! People started to talk about the fact that all her other movies are child porn since the big age scandal. This guy comes in and says, "I still have the WHOLE collection"!!

I posted: You mean the collection you destroyed once they were ruled illegal, RIGHT?

He quickly posted back: What are you talking about?? NO!! I got all her movies right here!!!

I removed his post and one of the other Admins. quickly PM'd him and told him to get a clue and S.T.F.U.!
