Hell, way back in junior high any guy who wore an earring was ridiculed, questioned. Remember the old indicator about which ear? Right is okay but left is gay! (I may have that wrong).
Point being, if men are engaging in what were formerly only actions that women engaged in, like wearing earrings, fingernail polish, dresses, high heels...we have a right to acknowledge that new behavior.
It's hardly being threatened by it...moreso being puzzled by it and there's a reason why.

I had an ear ring, well a stud ruby. Left lobe. Ah, to be young again..

I have 6 earrings, 3 in each ear lobe. I've had them since the mid-90s. Back then it was edgy. But so was tongue piercings, nose piercings, eyebrow piercings, nipple piercings, genital piercings, etc etc etc. Anyway, I took them out once several years ago and I felt like a piece of me was missing, so I put them back in and left them there. I have no interest in getting rid of them. I also had long hair several times in the past 20+ years. My hairline has receded slightly, just enough that I can't pull off long hair anymore, so I keep it short now. I almost got tattoos back in the day but I never really liked tattoos to begin with, and I still don't, and I could never justify spending money on something that I'm not into.

Music was better when ugly people were allowed to make it.

When I entered high school it was just on the edge of punk music becoming popular and recognized. We had a battle of the bands at one of my schools that became legendary (huge brawl between the rockers and the punks, with yours truly attending). Story for a different time.
During those years any guy with an earring was either gay or into punk music. To give you a yardstick, Bowie was considered edgy/gay/pseudo-punk music. Also, my city was known as Texas North because our main industries were oil, farming and cattle. The province was predominantly conservative rednecks.
All that to say, during the late 70's/early 80's not many guys wore earrings and when they did, it was noticed.
