Can I add a little dose of reality to this loan discussion? Most people qualify for IBR - Income Based Repayment, and I would go so far as to say every single person who can't afford their loans will qualify. That means that you pay significantly less than the full amount for a period of 25 years. The government eats the rest.
Example. Borrower has $100k in student loans and makes $40k. The 10 year loan repayment is $1,095. She's screwed and needs Bernie!
Not really. Assume she's single, 5.7% interest rate, and 2% annual wage growth, the IBR monthly payment is $274. It will only go up to $410.
Over 25 years she'll pay $101,392. (Basically interest free for 25 years). The 10 year repayment is $131,400. She saved $30k and spread it out over 25 years.
Now the fun part. How much loan forgiveness (interest forgiveness) does she get at the end? $141,245. The government eats that.
Edit: I am grandfathered under government and social services accelerated forgiveness (Trump eliminated that). My $1600/mo loan payment will be ~$460, and I will only pay that for 10 years. So thanks, guys, for eating $100k of my education. I appreciate you.

In the 70's universities came under enormous pressure to respond to the rise of radical feminism and offer "Women's Studies" programs. So they enlisted English professors to take on this new task with no backgrounds in sociology or art or, most importantly, history and philosophy. Consequently, they evolved into social movement education with absolutely no basis in any historic principles. It was a political move and they made it up as they went. Camille Paglia loves to go off on that subject.
