God, I've been doing it wrong all these years

Privilege sure is tricky. It's when you've got it that it's the hardest to see. I've definitely been caught with my foot in my mouth before. We all make mistakes and, hopefully, we are all trying to do better. Here are some tips - and this goes for white folks too. # Pass the mic. Share your access to privilege with someone who doesn’t have that access due to systemic oppression. Art patronage is a great way to do that. Check my bio link to support me in this way. # Having privilege isn't a bad thing, and doesn't make you a bad person, but it comes with responsibility. A great way to start is by listening and creating space for folks with less access than you. # It's harder than it seems because our privilege has taught us to do the exact opposite. But just like we can unlearn other unhealthy habits, we can unlearn this one. # One way I am passing the mic is through collaborative songwriting. I'm excited about sharing perspectives and stories, other than my own, through music. I’ve done this before with The Prison Music Project - an album in collaboration with folks I worked with inside a maximum security men’s prison. That work is what really showed me just how powerful music is as a platform. I recognize the power I hold with it and why I've been given access to it. I know it's my responsibility to use it to amplify the stories of those who struggle more than I do. I also know that my visibility as a female socialized, non-binary, queer person is important. Click the link in my profile to see how you can start writing with me and smashing the patriarchy through song. What story do you want told? TW: rape. Bodies are not for consumption. Human beings are not objects. Dehumanizing women and femme people is how rape culture continues. When we see each other as human, not object, not other, not threat, not temptation, we treat each other with respect. The way to end rape culture is to lift up the voices of survivors. Following me is a start. @zoeboekbinder Valuing people based on their sex appeal is dehumanizing. It is not a compliment. I have been harassed, assaulted, and raped. So when someone tells me something about how I look, I don't feel confident, I feel vulnerable. I am reminded that people in bodies like mine are seen as objects for male pleasure. When I say “bodies like mine” I mean perceived or presenting as female. It doesn't actually matter if we fit the standard or not, we will be measured on the same scale - and our value based on that system only results in our dehumanization. I don't want to hear about my sex appeal or lack thereof… based on whatever man happens to be looking and handing out judgements. I reject that system that perpetuates violence by dividing us as people. I do not exist to be consumed, to be measured, to be gazed upon. I exist to be human: to be loved and to love, to feel joy and loss, to create and to laugh. I exist. You can support my existence and my voice in the movement to end rape culture by following me (@zoeboekbinder) and clicking the link in my profile. #intersectionalfeminism #feminism #feminist #endrapeculture #smashthepatriarchy #stopstreetharassment #metoo #prochoice #genderequality #equality #womensrightsarehumanrights #protectwomen #womensupportingwomen #womenempoweringwomen #nomeansno #mybodymychoice

For the record I do condemn rapists. Even more so male rapists of young females, because it does fuck them up big time (which everybody then pays for).

I mean c'mon man. Nobody disagrees with that. It's the conflating that is the problem. Are psychological triggers real? Yes, of course. Does that make "trigger warnings" valid. Fuck no. Are there sexual assaults? Of course. Does that make every female in a questionable sexual encounter a victim? God, no.

I broadly agree with you. Slightly different blurred lines and perspective at the moment, probably because I'm working with child clients at the moment, including victims of abuse male and female. I'm more in tune with the victims perspective.

There's a lot of rage later, and it's very easy when you can't punish the perpetrator any further that you look for other targets.

This seems to have been turned into a kind of a PC-supported attack on men in general, and women with any sort of frustration are getting on board. But any attempt to point this out and you just shot down in today's environment. What would Zoe's therapist say? Tut tut.

I am not aware of any trauma-informed therapy that advocates broad condemnation as appropriate. We don't even do trauma work because it is so specialized and personal. It's not about societal issues. That is what makes it so disingenuous. Having said that, I get that speaking your truth can be cathartic; but that, again, is a personal journey.

Mad props for taking on child trauma. You're a bad ass.
