They likely do exist given the extent of the visible universe, the limited amount of which that has been closely observed, and the number of candidate worlds for the existance of life already discovered in this survey. As to what they use to get around, it will be exotic (by our terms) and is very likely to be something similar to the woodward effect, allowing propellantless propulsion in local space and warp fields for interstellar travel:

Personally, I've always had a hunch that StarTrek was an indoctrination program to psychologically prepare humanity for something much greater. The overlap that 1950s fiction by otherwise hack television writers (note this is in the height of the UFO sightings era) has had with emergent theoretical physics is simply hard to imagine as pure coincidence. It would be like finding maxwells equations accidentally scrawled on a pleistocene cave wall.
