Actually it was Xerox that created the first desktop computer. It was called the Alto. It was the first to have a mouse or graphic user interface, a document preparation systems, ethernet-based local networking, network-based laser printer services and email. It basically had everything we have now including a localized internet of sorts.
The story goes that John Warnock and Charles Geschke, who were working at Xerox PARC the division that built the machines wanted to show off what they had did. Especially seeing how Xerox only had plans to use the machines internally at Xerox. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were a couple of the guys that were given tours of the machines and they saw the potential of the designs stole them and ran with it. Also noteworthy is that John Warnock and Charles Geschke went on to be the creators of Adobe.
What is that symbol under the macs name?
Its the logo for their messenger service I believe.
I put that pic up on facebook a while back and a friend of mine got all pissed off, as a mac user, that the LHC probably uses a linux based system. I went onto explain that the first 3 symbols under PC are linux operating systems.
God I love this thread...
