I finally got it installed, but I had to follow some convoluted instructions to do it. I'm not quite sure why, but the instructions worked. Basically shut down every process and start up item that isn't Microsoft's through msconfig, and if you're using wifi to connect to the Internet, shut it off once the Windows 10 download on Windows Update gets to 100%. That's what worked for me.

After a bit of trouble with the initial install and hardware issues (dusty RAM DIMMs crying for me to clean them up), I'm hunting down drivers and utilities for my motherboard that aren't available under Windows 10. The sound drivers were a bitch. I couldn't figure out how to get the sound working, especially on the front headphone jack. The drivers Windows provided didn't work for my system, and Asus hasn't updated them since Windows 7. Lucky Microsoft kept Compatibility mode in this OS.

Happy to hear you have it sorted (almost)

This post alone will help me with my decision to delay trying it for a few months. Upgrading the OS shouldn't be dependent on shutting down all MS processes, your wifi when the download gets to a certain percentage etc...and driver issues should not appear ffs. If the drivers are present under Win 7 why not Win 10?

You need to shut down all NON-Microsoft processes and startup items. Through msconfig. Leave Microsoft's junk running. Then reboot your computer and do the upgrade. I forgot to mention that after you shut down all the junk in msconfig, you need to reboot your computer.

... and you must sacrifice an 18 year old white virgin with different colored eyes and large boobs to the Dark Gods of old.

Because the Microsoft Overlords demand it.
