Johnny Depp Named Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Actor

Forbes also calculates which movie star is worth more bang for the buck (hint: the MVP is a Marvel star)

Johnny Depp is Hollywood’s most overpaid actor, according to a new ranking from Forbes magazine.

Depp provided the least return on investment for movie studios forking over huge paychecks to secure the star, having paid back only $1.20 for every $1 paid (which, for the record, is still a return).

Depp earned $30 million through June of 2015, Forbes estimates, a salary padded by work in the bomb “Mortdecai” with Gwyneth Paltrow and the barely-break-even tech thriller “Transcendence.”

Depp takes the throne from several-year-winner Adam Sandler, though he should easily rebound with an arsenal of sure things in the next 18 months — like a reprise of the Mad Hatter in “Alice Through the Looking Glass” and another installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

On Depp’s heels were Denzel Washington paying out $6.50 for every buck he pockets, followed by Will Ferrell ($6.80 to $1), Liam Neeson ($7.20) and Will Smith ($8.60).

On the other, more profitable side of the coin — “Captain America” himself is doing his country proud, as Chris Evans returned a staggering $181.80 for every $1 he was paid for fare like “The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron” and “Captain America: Winter Soldier.”

Names accompanying Evans on the list of studio MVPs were some very famous women — though their inclusion further underscored Hollywoods’s pay disparity when it comes to gender.

Mila Kunis returns $87.30 for every dollar she takes home, with Scarlett Johansson close behind, handing in $84.90. The aforementioned Paltrow put her “Mortedcai” costar Depp to shame; she makes $82.90 for the change she stuffs in what we imagine is a lovely monogrammed shoulder bag.
