yup I'm late to the pc party (in case you haven't noticed already )

I think my defining moment on a pc wasn't the type of machine I was using, it was buying my own copy of XP
and doing a full install in 2004.I learned more about pc's that weekend, than the entire couple of years preceding using one at work.

There was no such things as Windows anywhere on the horizon yet, so all our computer science teachers told us we should learn all these computer languages because they were going to be the 'future' of computers

OOOHH, and Trek is on there!! I remember befrending the local Radio Shack guy and playing that thing for hours in the store. Helps if you're in a small town.

First one I ever owned, the Commodore 64

I had the VIC-20 and made a Biorhythm program for it, and it wouldn't graph because it blew the 8K limit! So, got a 64 for my Grade 12 grad. Still have it, the disc drive and the monitor.

I didn't have an actual Commodore monitor, it was an old tiny TV and I didn't get the disk drive right away either, it was mucho expensive back in the day. I think the drive unit cost almost as much as the PC did.
I got mine for $700 including a Commodore desk that fit the disc drive in a specially made drawer! Geek Out!

Yep. I didn't learn Fortran but did do PL/1, CP/M (the forerunner of DOS), COBOL, C (there was a time when that would impress people!), dBASE (was a programmer for 2 years in it -- earnt in 1987 what I'm earning now, but had no life).

I also was a salesman, and found out that a new computer was coming out called the Apricot, and bet the farm that it was going to be the coming thing. Metal construction and the first 3 1/2" drive built in. It went nowhere in N. America and I lost my job at CITA computers because I pushed the boss to invest in it as a sure thing. Ah, memories...

I was the guy in the office that "fried the Apricot" because I left it plugged in, and took the case off. The metal arced and blew the main board...had to travel 4 hours to get a new one.
