A british bomber pilot had a similar story, the plane and him got the shit shot out of them returning from a raid but he wasn't awarded a VC because there was an element of self preservation in his actions

I'm not a big fan of his, but the programmes he's bone about the recipients of victoria crosses and ww2 stuff really are fantastic. So if you enjoyed that one up there, I suggest you watch the other ones he's done
