Having a press conference at the White House is not a requirement, it is a professional courtesy. The President does not owe the press anything. It is not the media's job to hold the President accountable, and even if it was, then Jim Acosta's behavior wouldn't be the way to go about it. Accountability of the Executive Branch is the job of the Legislative and Judicial Branches. Accountability of any Branch of the US Government is the responsibility of the other two Branches. The press is not part of any Branch of the US Government. The Office of the President is the highest office in the US. There are rules of conduct for the press. Jim Acosta violated those rules and he got what he deserved. If you watch any White House press conference and look with an unbiased eye, Acosta is the only one acting the way he is. No other media personnel acted or acts the same way Acosta did. The way it works is this: the President has a tight schedule. Anything does not go. It is not a street interview. You get to ask one question and maybe one follow up if called on, you get your answer, then you defer to another reporter. You ask your question with respect and courtesy. You may get to ask other questions later, but you have to understand that the President has a country to run, there is very little time, and answering questions all day isn't helping anyone or anything. You're not the only person in the room. You do not get to dominate the President's time. You do not get to take over the press conference. You can ask tough questions, but you do not get to hurl accusations. Again, it is a courtesy, not a requirement that the President answers your questions. If the President says you're done, then you're done. If an aid comes to collect the microphone from you, then you hand it over immediately without complaint or argument. Period, end of. Acosta got what he deserved.
