The president's diplomatic buffoonery has gone from merely embarrassing to downright dangerous.

Last week's news that President Trump badly bungled his conversation with Australia's prime minister was certainly alarming, but in the context of this unending dystopian nightmare in which we all live, it wasn't that bad, really. (Ah, 2017, when the reaction to something like "The President just got into a shouting match with one of our closest allies before hanging up on them" is just a relieved, exhausted "But that's it?").

However, this isn't the only high-profile diplomatic conversation in which Trump showed off his breathtaking incompetence. Reuters has some truly remarkable details of the President's January 28 call with master puppeteer Vladimir Putin, which you should only read after setting down any breakable objects that may be in your hands right now.

In his first call as president with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump denounced a treaty that caps U.S. and Russian deployment of nuclear warheads as a bad deal for the United States, according to two U.S. officials and one former U.S. official with knowledge of the call.

So far, so good. (Again, it's all relative.)

When Putin raised the possibility of extending the 2010 treaty, known as New START, Trump paused to ask his aides in an aside what the treaty was, these sources said.

In case you're unfamiliar with New Start, it's a landmark agreement between Russia and the United States that requires both countries to reduce their numbers of nuclear warheads and launch-capable missiles to a specified threshold by 2018. These seem like details that a president should know before getting on the phone with the other side, but hey, I'm just spitballing here.

Trump then told Putin the treaty was one of several bad deals negotiated by the Obama administration, saying that New START favored Russia. Trump also talked about his own popularity, the sources said.

Even in this leaky-as-hell White House, these are absolutely brutal details to get out. (It's almost as if a remarkable number of the people who work for him took only three weeks to conclude that their boss an incompetent boor). I assume Putin is actually rather quiet on these calls, because he so frequently has to mute the line to prevent Trump from hearing him cackling gleefully and exchanging high-fives with whoever else is in the room.

During a debate in the 2016 presidential election, Trump said Russia had "outsmarted" the United States with the treaty, which he called "START-Up." He asserted incorrectly then that it had allowed Russia to continue to produce nuclear warheads while the United States could not.

This time around, Trump didn't whiff on both the treaty's name and its purpose. Silver linings!

In seriousness, the Australia story was embarrassing, but a few bad kangaroo-pun headlines and one hasty, chagrined John McCain phone call later, the whole thing blew over fairly quietly. The consequences of these types of calls are much more profound. Russia is not a longtime ally of the United States. It is governed by a ruthless dictator who poisons dissident journalists and, it cannot be forgotten, personally directed hacks of the 2016 election with the express intent of aiding the same clownfraud with whom he's now engaging in sensitive diplomatic negotiations. While the President of the United States is busy tweeting attacks at department stores he doesn't like, his lack of fitness for some of the most delicate aspects of his job is putting American interests in real danger, and he's too dense to even begin to understand that.

The White House Situation Room is usually used by the US President to discuss international and domestic crises.

But last week diners at Donald Trump's private country club got an inside look as the President created his own Situation Room — around a dinner table.

Members of Mr Trump's Mar-a-Lago club posted pictures on social media of the President being briefed on and discussing a response to a North Korean missile test in the outdoor dining area of the estate.

Richard DeAgazio posted three pictures on Facebook of Mr Trump and his guest, Japanese Prime Minster Shinzo Abe, being briefed on the situation.

Their discussions on the highly sensitive international incident were in full view and earshot of other members of the club.

"HOLY MOLY!!! It was fascinating to watch the flurry of activity at dinner when the news came that North Korea had launched a missile in the direction of Japan," Mr DeAgazio said in his Facebook post.
