    Precious Snowflake Snowflake Society

So I read this article this weekend. From the onset the title had me in a defensive posture because I love my children very much.. After reading the article though It really struck a cord with me.

I named this thread "snowflake society" because to me this article possibly exposes the root of this plague that has infested our country. I think a lot of the people that are standing in roads and acting the fool is/are really just one big temper tantrum because 'mommy and daddy' finally told their little asses, NO.

    See what you think.

That guy nailed it exactly on the head, definitely makes you think. I need the wife to read this because she thinks I'm "too hard" on the kid sometimes when in reality, I just want her to grow up more like I did, not like the very aptly named 'snowflake society'.

I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with loving your kids to death, but at the same time they need to learn to pull their own weight... These people here at work think I'm a monster because I'm making my 17 year old pay for the damages she made from rear ending some guy accidentally at a stoplight.. As I see it, she just learned a very valuable lesson about driving.. The lesson being that everything you do has a consequence. She still owes about $800.00 out of a $1450 bill.. I bet she will never rear-end someone else again at a stoplight. Of course I could have just paid the bill, but what would have been learned? Not a damn thing.

I try and do the same thing, I try and make the kid responsible for her decisions/actions and give her responsibilities that I expect to be done on a regular basis. She almost always doesn't do what's expected and when I try and correct/discipline her, there are times the wife will tell me that I'm being too hard on her, she's only 13, and when she (the wife) pulls that excuse, it makes my blood boil. And when I try and explain what I had to do when I was growing up and what was expected of me, she just pulls the "that was different" excuse. Although I will say, the wife has come around to my way of thinking more and more.

I've been working for what I want since I was 12.
My first big purchase was a Marlin Glenfield .22 lr. I got up at 4:30 AM to deliver a local paper before school so I could buy it.
After That I saved up for a stereo system for my room and albums (yes the original vinyl) and 8 tracks to play on it.
As a junior in high school I bused tables and washed dishes to buy a brand new off the lot "77 "Chevy Luv truck, and most of the rest of my money was spent adding really cool stuff to it.

...Now after over 40 years of living paycheck to paycheck, all I have to say is "hold my beer and watch this shit".

My first thought when reading the article was that I don't want kids I love putting my marriage before everything and I'm betting that's god damn hard with children, no matter how much you make them earn their keep.

As a 'millennial' though I appreciate his perspective.. he's preaching to parents which is refreshing.

My parents were strict/traditional compared to many other kids. We had rules, chores, full time jobs as teenagers when our friends got summer off. My dad taught us some tough lessons about finance and gave us a few swift kicks in the ass when we'd earned it (although interestingly now he says he regrets that part, not that I feel any animosity about it). My mom laid on high expectations for us with performance in school and extracurricular, being nice people, treating our grandparents with respect. I know many great 25-30 year olds, and some super entitled shitty ones who want the world on a platter. People shit on 'snowflakes' like they're entirely a product of it being 2017, but we were all raised by an older generation. I'm sure it's harder now than it was when I was a kid though, and that's scary too

I believe the biggest difference between new and old millennial's is technology.
I had a choice of half a dozen TV stations inside or go out into the world and do something.

now kids don't have to do shit to have the world

I bet that's so damn hard to manage as a parent. My parents just had to limit TV time and when we were a bit older, Nintendo time. Now with phones, I bet if you don't have one you're the poor loser kid in school. Kids probably playing on them in their rooms till all hours of the night (hell I'm a grown up and I do)

Not to mention most parents with young kids I know are scared shitless of the boogeymen and seem to want their kids indoors. My dad used to go out into the woods all day and just had to be home for dinner. I had that to a much lesser extent, couldn't really leave the neighborhood. Now I know parents who won't let their kids play in the backyard without immediate supervision...

Me to.. I practically lived outside.. fires, sledding, bike riding, ramp jumping, exploring, shooting in the woods, swimming, motorcycle, 3&4 wheelers, a little cliff diving even.. Have seen beaver dams up close, all kinds of cool ass natural stuff. My childhood was amazing by today's standard..

These were just .22 rifles.. and it was by no means an everyday occurrence.. And Yes one of my friends did accidentally shoot himself with it and had to be airlifted out once.. (wasn't funny at the time)
