Patriarchy ‘Should we end gender?’ Piers Morgan goes on epic rant as Emma Watson collects first gender-neutral gong at MTV Awards

Piers Morgan launched into an epic rant on Good Morning Britain as he challenged whether Emma Watson should have accepted a gender-neutral Best Actor gong at the 2017 MTV Movie And TV Awards.

Watson gave an empowering Best Actor speech on Sunday night during the ceremony as she scooped the genderless gong – the first time both men and women have been up for the same award in the award show’s history.

But this move didn’t go down too well with Morgan, who launched into a pretty epic rant on whether this signifies the end of gender, wryly joking we shouldn’t call anyone male or female again.

‘Am I wrong? Is it just me or am I a creaking old dinosaur that doesn’t get it?’ he said during Monday’s programme.

‘Should we ban the word man from life itself? Should nothing anymore be male or female?

‘Little babies just be little babies, no longer boys and girls? Should it all just be ended? Should we end gender as we know it? Is it the end of gender?’

After inviting comments from viewers, the 52-year-old added: ‘Let me know your thoughts, and if anyone thinks we should, I’ve got a doctor you can see later.’

Cue rather awkward looks from fellow presenters Susanna Reid and Charlotte Hawkins.

GMB showbusiness reporter Ross King later explained to Piers he was missing one important factor about the benefit of gender neutral awards ceremonies – it would make them considerably shorter.

‘It’s a stroke of genius by MTV,’ added Susanna.

Held at the Los Angeles, Shrine Auditorium, Watson’s historic Best Actor win recognised her role as Belle in Disney’s live-action update of Beauty and The Beast.

‘The first acting award in history that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience,’ she said.

‘MTV’s move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone, but to me it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and that doesn’t need to be separated into two different categories.’
